Costa Rica Birding Photography Tour: Cloud Forest to Sarapiquí Lowlands
Overview
This thirteen-day birding journey moves from the cool Talamanca highlands to the humid Caribbean lowlands, with an optional extension across the divide to the Pacific. Begin in San José, climb the Pan-American Highway over Cerro de la Muerte, and settle into the Savegre River valley at 7,000 feet, where Resplendent Quetzals are found year-round along cloud-forest trails. Continue to Rancho Naturalista, where over two hundred species have been recorded from the veranda, then to Guayabo National Monument and the Sarapiquí lowlands. A morning at La Selva Biological Station and a late-afternoon boat on the Sarapiquí River round out the main route.
Photographic opportunities
Light and habitat shift constantly on this journey, and so does the subject matter. In the Savegre Valley, cloud-forest trails pass waterfalls and secluded canyons where Resplendent Quetzals are found year-round, often near a fruiting tree where several males may gather. The montane oak forest itself rewards close work: massive oaks dressed in bromeliads, lichens, mosses, ferns and orchids. Road walks above the lodge open views over the Talamanca Range and bring Flame-throated Warbler, Flame-colored Tanager, Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher, Black Guan and Northern Emerald-Toucanet within range.
At Rancho Naturalista the veranda and forest feeders concentrate hummingbirds, tanagers and the tiny Black-crested Coquette, with Green Honeycreeper and Blue Dacnis in the Cecropia crowns. In the Sarapiquí lowlands, garden hummingbirds and mixed tanager flocks offer close, patient frames. The optional Pacific extension trades cloud forest for dry forest, mangroves and wetland deltas, with a slow tractor circuit ending at sunset.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to birders and photographers who enjoy looking as much as listing — the kind of traveller content to spend a dawn hour on a balcony watching tanagers work the feeders, or to linger on a cloud-forest trail where Resplendent Quetzals are found year-round.
The pace is steady and unhurried, mixing short nature walks, forest trails, and time on the veranda, paced to the group. The main journey runs thirteen days from San José through the Talamanca highlands to the Sarapiquí lowlands; an optional Pacific Coast Extension adds Carara, the Tárcoles River, and La Ensenada. Physical level is easy.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in San José
A transfer from the airport to Hotel Bouganvillea eases you into Costa Rica's Central Valley, where the grounds and surrounding greenery offer a gentle first look at the country's birdlife. The afternoon settles into the hotel's gardens, a quiet introduction to the region before the photography tour proper begins. Dinner is taken at the hotel, a chance to rest after travel and prepare for the days ahead. No species are recorded for this arrival day, so the focus stays on settling in and getting a feel for the setting.
Day 2
Cerro de la Muerte and the Savegre Valley
The Pan-American Highway climbs the Talamanca cordillera to Cerro de la Muerte, the 11,000-foot pass once crossed on foot and by mule, its summit often wrapped in cloud. Beyond it the road descends through remnant forest and hillside farms toward the Savegre River valley, with stops for photographs and whatever is in bloom. An early garden walk at the Bougainvillea, where tropical flowers keep birds busy, sets the pace before the climb. At Savegre, a nature trail follows a rushing trout stream, where an American Dipper may work the water.
Day 3
Savegre Valley Road and Cloud Forest Trails
Open views over the Talamanca Range forests frame a gentle walk along the road above the lodge, where Flame-throated Warbler, Flame-colored Tanager and Black Guan move through the trees. Valley trails then wind toward waterfalls, secluded canyons and mountain lookouts, past rivers and small lakes. Resplendent Quetzals are found here year-round, often near a favourite fruiting tree where several males may gather. The montane oak forest, its massive oaks dressed in bromeliads, lichens, mosses, ferns and orchids, is the quiet star of the day. An optional ridgeline loop climbs above the lodge.
Day 4
Veranda Birding at Rancho Naturalista, Turrialba
From the Savegre Valley the road climbs back through the Talamanca mountains and drops toward Turrialba, where Rancho Naturalista sits at a comfortable 3,000 feet and the air cools. The bird list shifts toward mid-elevation Caribbean-side specialties, and the veranda does the introductions: hummingbirds come in close as the light fades. Keel-billed and Yellow-throated Toucans and Collared Aracari may arrive to roost at day's end, a quiet close to the drive.
Day 5
Rancho Naturalista Grounds and Mid-Montane Forest
Today centers on the grounds of Rancho Naturalista in Tuis, a birdwatching lodge set within Cartago Province's lush mid-montane forest. After breakfast, balcony birding at Rancho Naturalista brings tanagers and hummingbirds to the feeders, with the Black-crested Coquette a hoped-for visitor. The reserve's forest trails and forest feeders reveal Cecropia crowns, manakins, antshrikes, and a Snowcap among hummingbirds. A local market lunch and dinner follow before returning to the lodge, a peaceful haven for nature lovers and photographers seeking rare species.
Day 6
Guayabo National Monument to Sarapiquí Lowlands
A drive from Rancho Naturalista descends toward the Caribbean lowlands, breaking at Guayabo National Monument for a picnic lunch among its pre-Columbian stone ruins before the road drops into Sarapiquí by afternoon. Settled at Selva Verde Lodge, local birding hotspots around the community come next, where private gardens draw a rich array of hummingbirds and the lower elevation brings tanagers into play. The day moves from highland forest through archaeological ground to warm lowland garden habitat.
Day 7
La Selva Biological Station and the Sarapiquí River
Birding at La Selva Biological Station, a research reserve of old-growth and secondary rainforest in Costa Rica's Caribbean lowlands, where trails and canopy edges offer close views of the forest interior. A boat trip on the Sarapiquí River follows, scanning the banks and overhanging vegetation for wildlife. Between the reserve and the river, the day covers both woodland and waterways around Selva Verde Lodge, with early breakfast and lunch and dinner at the lodge.
Day 8
Return Transfer from Selva Verde Lodge to San José
A group bus carries the tour back from Selva Verde Lodge through the lowland landscape toward San José and SJO Airport, where the main itinerary and the optional Pacific Coast extension divide. The morning runs through the Caribbean slope's forest and farmland, a final stretch of green before the city. Flights are best planned for after 1:00 PM. For those continuing, the Pacific side of the divide follows without a second long transfer or an extra flight, trading the wet Caribbean lowlands for a different set of habitats.
Day 9
Central Pacific: San José to Cerro Lodge
The route turns west from San José toward the Central Pacific, following a green valley where a rushing river runs down toward the coast. Arriving at Cerro Lodge in time for lunch, the afternoon is given to the surrounding habitat and its birds. The lodge sits in transitional forest above the Tárcoles River, a setting known for species such as the Scarlet Macaw, Turquoise-browed Motmot and American Crocodile in the river below. The day closes at the lodge, with the coastal forest on hand for photography.
Day 10
La Ensenada Lodge on the Gulf of Nicoya
A coastal drive carries the group up the Pacific shore to La Ensenada, a family-run country lodge set on a lake beside the Gulf of Nicoya and held for two nights. The surrounding sanctuary of water, woodland and open country gives photographers time to work quietly at the water's edge and along the trails, watching for the birdlife the Gulf of Nicoya area is known for. Meals are taken at the lodge between sessions, and the pace stays unhurried enough to return to the light as it changes.
Day 11
La Ensenada Dry Forest and Mangrove Walk
Lowland scrub, dry forest, pasture and mangrove form a mosaic at La Ensenada, walked slowly with cameras ready. The habitat is known for Crested Bobwhite, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl and White-throated Magpie-Jay, alongside hummingbirds, flycatchers and wrens, with staff knowledge sometimes locating a screech-owl roost. After lunch, a tractor circuit crosses the ranch at an unhurried pace, watching for Banded Wren, Black-headed Trogon and Streak-backed Oriole, and closing with wine and cheese as the sun sets over the dry forest.
Day 12
La Ensenada to San José via a Small-Town Park
Leaving the Pacific coast behind, the route climbs back toward San José through farmland and small towns. A stop at a local park has become a quiet tradition for past groups, a place where a remarkably tame Black-and-White Owl has sometimes been found. After the drive, the group gathers for a farewell dinner, with departures the following morning. The day closes at Hotel Bougainvillea, marking the end of the Pacific Coast Extension.
Day 13
Pacific Coast Extension Departure
Today the journey concludes with a final breakfast included in the package. Afterward, a departure transfer takes you from Hotel Bouganvillea to the airport, marking the end of the itinerary. This day focuses on a smooth transition from the hotel to your flight, with no additional activities scheduled. The route is straightforward: breakfast at the hotel, then the transfer to the airport for departure.

A few kind words
The Magical Mystery Tour!
In March 2026, I ventured out of my comfort zone and booked an 11 day photography tour with Tristan, through Remote Expeditions.
It was amazing. Truly remote, we visited several indigenous communities in the Sierra Nevada, first to meet them and find out a little about their way of life and second lay to photograph them. Additionally there were several opportunities for photographing birds, landscape and City Scenes in Cartagena.
We were fortunate enough to to be a small group, of two , which I was more that happy to pay a premium for. This gave us an intimate experience with the people we met along the way, additionally the 1:1 attention to our personal interests in photography was incredible.
Tristan was a real treat! He has spent the last 10 years living in and exploring this region of Colombia. He has cultivated relationships with the indigenous peoples of the area, and loves to share his understanding of their culture with you.
He structured the tour perfectly. He was organized, knowledgeable (about the land, its people and photography), compassionate, passionate and eager to share his vast internal encyclopedic information with you. When he didn’t know, he would quickly get you the information.
The remote places you get to, by 4x4, hiking and boating are exceptional. You could never find these places on your own.
Knowing little about Colombia, I was initially a little hesitant to take this tour. Having just returned, I wouldn’t hesitate for a nanosecond.
What ever type of tour you take with Tristan, you won’t be disappointed. He delivered everything he he promised, and a few amazing surprises more.
A magical tour of undiscovered Colombia
I cannot believe how fortunate I am, to have discovered Remote Expeditions, with Tristan as a tour guide, and photographer extraordinaire, sharing his view of Colombia with us, through the lens.
Tristan is an incredible guide. Safe, organized, thoughtful and experienced. He truly chose the best that this mostly remote tour of Colombia has to offer. He has built strong relationships with people in remote villages and has sourced ways to shine a light on their cultural specialities. Dancing, singing, food all combined to allow for great photo opportunities.
In the land of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, you can feel the energy, experience the culture and bring home amazing photographs that capture the moments.
If Colombia is on your photographic bucket list, Tristan is your guide. I recommend him and his beautifully curated tour, without hesitation.
Our Second Unforgettable Trip with Tristan
Our second tailor-made trip with my husband and our friend Tristan, who always knows how to make the trip enjoyable with his simple approach and his own special touch that adds that little extra something!
Tristan is very calm, cheerful, and always understanding of our expectations!
Our first trip to Patagonia was exceptional, and now in September we're going on a trip to Madeira, which will be completely different but also very enjoyable.
Thank you, Tristan.
Good things come in threes 😉
