In general buying filters is a very expensive operation.

The big brands like Lee or Cokin are simply overpriced.

On the other hand, the cheapest brands that we find are often of very poor quality, unusable, and leave a color tint that is generally unusable in post processing

K&F has managed to position itself in a very accessible price range.

But is the quality of the optics good? Are they convenient to use? Do they leave a color tint?

It is what you’re about to find out

Stay tuned

Shipment

Ordered directly from the K&F website, the filters arrived in less than 1 week.
The packaging was very strong, in a hard cardboard box. Inside, the filters were protected in the pouch that separates the filters by compartment.

At this point, there is therefore nothing to say, there is almost no chance that the filters will arrive damaged.

Unboxing

The filters arrived in very secure packaging, in a hard cardboard box (see image above). Inside the box, the filters are held in a stylish pouch with separate compartments for the three filters and the holder. They claim this pouch is waterproof – didn’t want to test that feature!

The Wallet

The wallet is well padded, and has 3 dividers to keep everything organized, to hold and protect each filter in the kit.

The fabric is very good quality, and the zipper slides very well and also seems to be of good quality.

One thing I particularly like is that the pouch also has a velcro strap at the back that you can attach to your belt, which makes the filters very easy to use (see section easy of use)

It seems like a detail, but when you have to change your filter when taking more complex photos, it’s always a hassle to know where to put your filter, while being careful not to get fingerprints on it, and you always end up messing up your filter.

Here, the changes are made with consummate ease and one wonders why I hadn’t switched to this system long before.

It’s especially handy when you’re shooting in a river, or when you can’t put your bag on the ground.

The Filter Kit

The K&F Concept Magnetic filter kit includes the holder and comes with 3 filters :

  • UV filter
  • Circular multi-coated polarising filter
  • 10 stop ND filter (Nano-X ND1000 10)

The filters and holder are all very slim in design, yet seem sturdy and rigid. The glass on all the filters is coated to reduce reflections and making the filter anti-scratch, water repellant as well as oil and dust resistant.

Let’s detail them one by one :

The magnetic Filter Ring

The first ring in the pack is the magnetic filter ring.  This is the main adapter that screws to your lens to provide the base for the magnetic filter set.

It is up to you to decide on the size according to the diameter of your lens. The range of available diameters goes from 49mm to 82mm.

KF FiltersPin
KF Filters

I opted for the 82mm thread size to fit my Canon 24-70mm and my Canon 16-35mm which I primarily use for landscape, Street Photo and Architecture.  The magnetic ring screwed to the lens with no issues and stayed in position without a problem.  I’ve just left the ring in place as it does not affect the use of your lens cap.

Once the magnetic is installed the filters, the filters seem to be well fixed and do not move.

A small flaw, is that the lens cap of my 24-70mm f2.8 Canon does not allow to clip to the magnetic ring and you have to disassemble everything to protect your lens.

However, with the lens cap of my Canon 16-35mm, I did not have this problem.

The Circular UV Filter

In photography, there are 2 schools: the purists who do not prefer to add an extra layer of glass to keep the maximum sharpness on the pictures, and those who prefer to protect their lens from any possible scratch, or in case of fall.

This is the main purpose of the circular UV filter.

In my case, I only use the Circular UV filter when I’m trekking through the jungle. But as soon as I put my camera on my K&F tripod, I usually remove the filter.

This filter is also magnetic, so if you use it, you won’t need to use the magnetic ring.

In terms of color tint, the filter is perfectly transparent, and I did not notice any chromatic aberration

Circular Polarizing Filter

Polarising filters help remove unwanted reflections from your images. Useful if you are photographing water or through glass. They also help boost the saturation of your images, especially the blues and greens, so useful in Landscape photography.

Neutral Density ND1000 filter

The ND1000 filter will allow you to unleash your creative side by allowing you to slow your shutter speed (and hence, time itself) by enormous amounts, and allowing you to capture beautiful streams of water, moving clouds, passing crowds, or seascapes.

ND1000s provide a 10 stop reduction in light. For context, if you meter your scene for a 1/125 exposure, adding an ND1000 filter to your lens will allow you to obtain the same exposure with a shutter speed of 8s. This is incredibly useful when wanting to smooth the flow of water, traffic, clouds, people in busy areas, cars, aircraft, or any other scenes of constant moving matter.

Basically ND filters are like sunglasses

One of the disadvantages of ND filters is that it usually comes with a strong color cast.

But I was both thrilled and surprised to note that the K&F filters were 100% free of any of these usual problems, whilst the coatings themselves completely eliminated any internal reflections.

Ease of Use

Installing and removing the filters

As said earlier, one thing I particularly like is that the pouch also has a velcro strap at the back that you can attach to your belt, which makes the filters very easy to use

It seems like a detail, but when you have to change your filter when taking more complex photos, it’s always a hassle to know where to put your filter, while being careful not to get fingerprints on it, and you always end up messing up your filter.

Magnet rings

The magnetic filters are stackable in which ever order you wish to use them and the strength of the magnets used is sufficient to hold all three in places with no risk of them dropping off, but not to the level where it becomes impossible to remove them with one hand.

KF Magnetic FiltersPin
KF Magnetic Filters

The K+F Concept Filter Package is pretty simple to use in the field. First, you attach the magnetic ring. Then you put any one of the three filters you wish on there.

So essentially, you’re just changing the filters out as you need.

Build Quality

There are several factors to consider when evaluating the quality of K&F filters.

Overall, the filter kit feels of very high quality – now to test it out!

Metal quality

One of the first things to look at is the quality of the rings themselves. They are made of metal, which is much more resistant than some plastic rings from competing brands.

The screw thread is therefore very resistant over time.

Image Quality

To make a test, I took some pictures in a very short time, and with exactly the same post processing :

  • Temperature +3900 K
  • Tint : +14

Testing the Color Cast

On the left you can see a picture taken without filter, and on the right a picture taken with the ND1000 filter (30s at f14)

The white balance between the 2 photos is exactly the same:

As you can see, there is almost no tint added to the photo. The ND1000 filter is almost perfectly neutral!

KF ND FilterPin
KF ND Filter

Same test performed with the Circular Polarizing Filter.

We see this time a slight tint of color a bit yellowish, but it is very easy to catch up by playing with the color balance.

Observe also as on the photo on the right, the filter allows to give more contrast and brings out well the details of the photo.

KF Polarizing FilterPin
KF Polarizing Filter

So in conclusion on this color cast test, the K&F Filter comes out brilliantly, with no color cast on the ND1000 and a slight warmer tint with the Polarizer, but a more detailed picture.

Vignetting

Using on a Canon 5D mark IV, with either a 24-70mm or a 16-35mm, I didn’t notice any vignetting.

The advantage these filters have over other circulars is that being magnetic, there are no screw threads, which makes them thinner than its competitors, Even when stacking multiple filters, there is still no vignetting

Chromatic aberration

Here are the pictures at 500% zoom. You can see here an exceptional optical quality. The photo with the filter looks even sharper than the photo without the filter

KF ND FilterPin

Once again, here is the chromatic aberation test with the polarizing filter.

KF Polarizing FilterPin

There is absolutely no aberation, which proves that the glass is of exceptional quality.

Field Testing

Here is a field testing so you can see the wonder that can do the ND1000 filter with waterfalls

I took multiple exposure to get this shot, In fact is a panorama of 6 tiles, using 3 bracketed exposure each time.

So I was please to be able to remove the ND filter with ease between 2 shots.
