Patagonia Photography Tour

Overview

A photographic journey into the raw heart of southern Patagonia, where granite spires, ice fields, and vast steppe shift under restless light. The tour weaves between Argentina and Chile, following a rhythm of early starts and deliberate pace. It moves from the trailheads of El Chaltén—gateway to the Fitz Roy massif and Cerro Torre—to the calving faces of Perito Moreno Glacier, and finally into the wind-scoured horizons of Torres del Paine. Along the way, autumn colour flares in lenga forests, condors ride thermals, and campsites become quiet observatories for alpenglow. This is a considered immersion in landscape, shaped for photographers who want time to watch and respond.

Why I created this expedition

The story of this journey is written in the quality of the light—and in the effort it takes to meet it. We arrive in El Chaltén not as tourists, but as temporary residents of the trail. The days quickly find their cadence: a headlamp-lit departure before dawn, the crunch of gravel underfoot, then a slow revelation as rock walls emerge from darkness and the first colour catches summits. Each camp—Laguna Capri, Poincenot, Agostini—repositions us inside the frame, so that the walk to the viewpoint is short enough to become a private ritual.

At Laguna de los Tres, the ascent is steep and honest, but the reward is an amphitheatre of granite holding a glacial lake, with Fitz Roy’s outline fracturing the morning sky. Nearby, a quieter path leads to a lesser-known lagoon, offering a different visual register for those who choose it. The guide recalls needing three visits to Laguna Torre before the towers revealed themselves cleanly at dawn—a reminder that these mountains keep their own schedule. In Chile, the terrain opens up. Torres del Paine delivers long vistas, guanaco silhouettes on ridges, and the ice-riven face of Grey Lake. Condors trace the thermals above Mirador Ferrier, and at Sodexo campground the view feels like a panoramic plate. Every transition—the four-hour drives, the border crossing, the final flight from Puerto Natales—becomes part of the visual diary, stitching together a landscape that never stops offering new angles to the patient eye.

Photographic opportunities

Patagonia’s visual language is built on contrast: sheer rock against layered ice, autumn orange against glacial blue, stillness interrupted by the sudden collapse of a serac into milky water. The itinerary places you in position for the most transient of these moments. Dawn after dawn, we work with sidelight as it carves the landscapes, learning to balance exposure for brilliant snow and deep shadow. Long-exposure practice comes naturally at Cascada Escondida and along wind-triggered lake edges, while filters help hold detail in skies that change minute by minute. Scale is a constant puzzle—how to convey the immensity of a cirque or the weight of a glacier tongue—solved through compositional choices discussed in the field. Night sessions, weather permitting, introduce the basics of low-light work under a southern sky. Throughout, the emphasis is on reading the environment calmly, applying technique to match intent, and receiving feedback that refines your eye rather than imposing a formula.

Who this journey is for

This itinerary will appeal to mountain-oriented photographers—from beginners keen to learn the craft in a generous outdoor classroom to experienced practitioners wanting dedicated time on location. The pace is moderate: day hikes carry a full pack between campsites, and some ascents, such as the climb to Laguna de los Tres, are genuinely demanding. Nights are spent mainly in tents. Those comfortable with an early-morning rhythm and a degree of physical effort will settle into the flow quickly. It is not a tour for those seeking hotel comforts every night or a rigid, bus-window approach to landscape. Instead, it suits the observant, the curious, and anyone who believes that a great photograph often begins with simply arriving before the sun does.

A few kind words

The Magical Mystery Tour!

In March 2026, I ventured out of my comfort zone and booked an 11 day photography tour with Tristan, through Remote Expeditions.
It was amazing. Truly remote, we visited several indigenous communities in the Sierra Nevada, first to meet them and find out a little about their way of life and second lay to photograph them. Additionally there were several opportunities for photographing birds, landscape and City Scenes in Cartagena.
We were fortunate enough to to be a small group, of two , which I was more that happy to pay a premium for. This gave us an intimate experience with the people we met along the way, additionally the 1:1 attention to our personal interests in photography was incredible.
Tristan was a real treat! He has spent the last 10 years living in and exploring this region of Colombia. He has cultivated relationships with the indigenous peoples of the area, and loves to share his understanding of their culture with you.

He structured the tour perfectly. He was organized, knowledgeable (about the land, its people and photography), compassionate, passionate and eager to share his vast internal encyclopedic information with you. When he didn’t know, he would quickly get you the information.
The remote places you get to, by 4x4, hiking and boating are exceptional. You could never find these places on your own.
Knowing little about Colombia, I was initially a little hesitant to take this tour. Having just returned, I wouldn’t hesitate for a nanosecond.
What ever type of tour you take with Tristan, you won’t be disappointed. He delivered everything he he promised, and a few amazing surprises more.

A magical tour of undiscovered Colombia

I cannot believe how fortunate I am, to have discovered Remote Expeditions, with Tristan as a tour guide, and photographer extraordinaire, sharing his view of Colombia with us, through the lens.
Tristan is an incredible guide. Safe, organized, thoughtful and experienced. He truly chose the best that this mostly remote tour of Colombia has to offer. He has built strong relationships with people in remote villages and has sourced ways to shine a light on their cultural specialities. Dancing, singing, food all combined to allow for great photo opportunities.
In the land of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, you can feel the energy, experience the culture and bring home amazing photographs that capture the moments.
If Colombia is on your photographic bucket list, Tristan is your guide. I recommend him and his beautifully curated tour, without hesitation.

Our Second Unforgettable Trip with Tristan

Our second tailor-made trip with my husband and our friend Tristan, who always knows how to make the trip enjoyable with his simple approach and his own special touch that adds that little extra something!
Tristan is very calm, cheerful, and always understanding of our expectations!
Our first trip to Patagonia was exceptional, and now in September we're going on a trip to Madeira, which will be completely different but also very enjoyable.
Thank you, Tristan.
Good things come in threes 😉
