Argentina's Puna: A High-Altitude Landscape Photography Tour
Overview
A photographic traverse across Argentina’s remote Puna—a high-altitude desert where salt flats meet volcanic cones and pumice fields glow under crystalline light. Starting from Salta, the route climbs through the coloured strata of the Quebrada de Humahuaca before entering the salt wilderness around Tolar Grande. Sessions at Cono de Arita, Ojos de Mar, and Salinas Grandes reveal a stark geometry of white crust and dark lava, while the wind-sculpted Campo de Piedra Pómez and the vast dunes of Tatón offer endless graphic possibility. Comfortable boutique lodges and quiet high-plains inns frame each day’s rhythm of sunrise and sunset photography, with a final descent into the vineyards of Cafayate.
Why I created this expedition
There is a moment, well above the tree line, when the horizon flattens into a single line of pale salt and the dust on the lens catches the first warmth of dawn. This journey begins not in the desert but among the painted ravines of the Quebrada de Humahuaca—layered slopes of ochre, violet, and rust that sharpen the eye before the land opens into something older and more severe. By the time the convoy rolls onto the Salinas Grandes, the palette has already thinned to white and blue, the crust crackling under a sky that seems to press the landscape into submission.
The days that follow unwind across a territory of extremes: the black lava apron below Cono de Arita, the mirror-like brine pools of Ojos de Mar, and the turquoise silence of Laguna Verde at first light. High passes connect tiny settlements like Tolar Grande, Antofalla, and El Peñón, each a pause between photographic beats. Morning light rakes the Carachi Pampa volcano, then later the same low sun finds the pumice labyrinth of Campo de Piedra Pómez—ridges of bone-white stone carved into improbable tunnels and fins.
Further west, the silhouette of Volcán Peinado rises above a high-altitude lake, and the itinerary bends towards the dunes of Tatón, where wind-stirred sand re-forms hour by hour. After days spent reading textures of salt, rock, and ash, the return through the Quebrada de las Flechas and the Valle de los Calchaquíes feels like a slow exhale, the vineyards of Cafayate softening the light before the road reaches Salta again.
Photographic opportunities
Light is the common thread. At altitude, the air is thin and the sun rakes at a low angle for hours, revealing crust textures on the salt flats, the sharp relief of volcanic cones, and the fine striations inside the pumice field. The Salinas Grandes and the pan beneath Cono de Arita deliver minimalist compositions of white, grey, and pale blue, often under a sky that holds a single band of cloud. Ojos de Mar and Laguna Verde add an element of reflection—shallow, high-saline waters that turn the surrounding peaks into abstract doubles. Rain-eroded labyrinths of Campo de Piedra Pómez offer endless studies of form and shadow, while the white sand dunes near El Peñón shift with the wind, constantly renewing their geometry. Dawn at Carachi Pampa volcano and sunset over the dunes of Tatón provide two very different exercises in silhouette and scale, with the distant Andes always present as a clean horizon line.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to landscape photographers drawn to remote, high-desert terrain and the particular quality of light found above 3,500 metres. Days are structured around early starts and late finishes, making patience and a willingness to work in cold, dry, and sometimes windy conditions essential. The physical level is easy—transfers handle most distances—but altitude is a constant factor; a sensible acclimatisation approach is woven into the route. No demanding treks are required, and the rewards are raw, underexplored scenes that demand nothing more than a careful eye and an unhurried frame.

A few kind words
Excellent Travel & Photography Guide
Tristan created a wonderful cultural experience for us over a 10 day visit to Cuba. From a photography perspective, he had researched people and locations to insure the best model, in the most cuban environment in the best light. Although we were focused on photography, he rounded out the tour with opportunities to experience the history (visit to old sugar plantation), the land (visit to a farm with oxen and a hike to waterfall), and the food (experiencing local food and drink in beautiful settings). I would highly recommend Tristan as a guide. We are already planning our next trip with him.
