Argentina's Puna: A High-Altitude Landscape Photography Tour

A photographic traverse across Argentina’s remote Puna—a high-altitude desert where salt flats meet volcanic cones and pumice fields glow under crystalline light. Starting from Salta, the route climbs through the coloured strata of the Quebrada de Humahuaca before entering the salt wilderness around Tolar Grande. Sessions at Cono de Arita, Ojos de Mar, and Salinas Grandes reveal a stark geometry of white crust and dark lava, while the wind-sculpted Campo de Piedra Pómez and the vast dunes of Tatón offer endless graphic possibility. There is a moment, well above the tree line, when the horizon flattens into a single line of pale salt and the dust on the lens catches the first warmth of dawn. This journey begins not in the desert but among the painted ravines of the Quebrada de Humahuaca—layered slopes of ochre, violet, and rust that sharpen the eye before the land opens into something older and more severe. By the time the convoy rolls onto the Salinas Grandes, the palette has already thinned to white and blue, the crust crackling under a sky that seems to press the landscape into submission.

After days spent reading textures of salt, rock, and ash, the return through the Quebrada de las Flechas and the Valle de los Calchaquíes feels like a slow exhale, the vineyards of Cafayate softening the light before the road reaches Salta again.
