Panama Photography Tour: Indigenous Villages, Canal & Caribbean Islands

Overview

A visual journey that moves between the faded colonial elegance of Casco Viejo, the monumental locks of the Panama Canal, and the quiet daily rituals of two indigenous communities. This photography tour opens rare access to the Emberá village of Puru and a multi-day sailing passage through the Kuna Yala islands. Expect a vivid interplay of urban geometry, tropical wildlife, and seascapes lit by the low Caribbean sun. The itinerary unfolds at an easy pace, with time to watch fishermen, plant medicine walks, and nights where the only light comes from the boat’s mast and the stars.

Why I created this expedition

Arrival brings a slide show and a shared dinner, but the city begins to reveal itself the following morning on the slopes of Cerro Ancón. A half-hour climb through flowering undergrowth ends above the canal, where container ships shrink to scale against the jungle. Later that day, a speedboat slides into the main channel at Gamboa, navigating between islands and stopping at Isla Mono to watch the treetops move with primates. The water here is not wilderness—it is a working seaway, and the contrast of bow waves and howler monkey calls makes for an unusual rhythm.

On day three the pavement gives way to red dirt tracks leading to Puerto Corotu. A dugout canoe takes the group upriver to Emberá Puru. The village receives visitors without performance; lunch is shared, children drift between thatched buildings, and a botanist walks into the forest to explain plant medicine and the significance of ritual tattooing. It is an unhurried portrait session shaped by permission and patience.

From there the story shifts to the Kuna Yala territory—over three hundred low islands scattered across the Caribbean. Days dissolve into sailing between anchorages with names like Gorgy, Sugar Island, and Coco Bandero. Snorkeling gear, kayaks, and meals prepared on board frame the quiet hours. Nights are spent moored off Kuanidup or similar sand-fringed islets, with tripods set on wet sand pointed at constellations. The return to Panama City ends with a drink on the JW Marriott terrace, looking over Punta Pacifica toward the canal’s distant lights.

Photographic opportunities

The tour layers distinct visual registers that rarely coexist in a single week. In Panama City, the narrow streets of Casco Viejo offer peeling paint, wrought-iron balconies, and street portraits in warm afternoon light. From Cerro Ancón, the view frames the canal basin against the Pacific haze—a long-lens study in scale.

On the waterway itself, the speedboat ride yields close work with frigatebirds, passing ships, and the dense greenery of Isla Mono. At Emberá Puru, the lens turns inward: natural-light portraiture during daily activities, documentation of plant medicine walks, and the textures of traditional body decoration. In San Blas, the palette shifts again—pale sand, turquoise shallows, palm silhouettes at sunset, and astrophotography from the deck of a sailboat. Because the sailing segment moves slowly, the same island can be photographed in entirely different light over the course of a day. The Kuna families who appear in these scenes are encountered through genuine exchange, not staged performance.

Who this journey is for

This itinerary will appeal to photographers who are as curious about cultural narrative as they are about landscape. The pace is easy: short uphill walks, dugout canoe transfers, and straightforward boarding of small boats and 4×4 vehicles. No demanding physical effort is required beyond basic mobility in warm, tropical conditions. While the tour is not physically strenuous, it rewards patience and a willingness to let images come through time spent rather than through hurried observation. Travelers who prefer fully curated urban luxury may find the San Blas nights—simple cabins or sleeping on board—a conscious departure from comfort; for those seeking a genuine connection to place, that simplicity is precisely the point.

Merci Tristan !

Voyage extra-ordinaire

Tristan brilliantly rose to the challenge of organizing our immersive trip among the indigenous peoples of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. For four weeks, we were able to count on him and on his flexible and flawless organization. His detailed knowledge and understanding of the places we visited and the people we met enriched our daily discoveries. He was always attentive, considerate, cheerful, and generous. More than a guide, it felt like traveling with a friend.
