Guatemala Photo Tour
Overview
This itinerary traces a loop through Guatemala’s layered landscapes—from colonial streets to volcanic ridges, highland markets to jungle temples. Each day is paced for observation: dawn light on Tikal’s limestone temples, blue-hour eruptions of Fuego, the texture of handwoven fabric at Lake Atitlan. The route avoids rush; instead, it leans into stillness, local encounters, and the slow unfolding of light. Photographers move through Antigua, Acatenango, Chichicastenango, the lake towns, and Petén, with time built for composition. No guarantees of wildlife or weather, but the framework invites patience and attention.
Why I created this expedition
The journey begins in Antigua, where cobblestones hold the memory of volcanoes. Morning light spills over Cerro de la Cruz, and the Santa Catalina Arch frames a street scene that feels both staged and accidental. A tuk-tuk passes; a model in traditional traje waits in the shadows. The day moves between markets and convents, and by evening the group climbs into a 4×4, heading for the flanks of Acatenango.
The volcano changes the rhythm. A one-hour hike leads to camp; the air thins, and below, Fuego sends up bursts every few minutes. At blue hour, the explosions read as slow-motion fire. Next morning, some choose the summit for a wider view; others stay near camp, working the terrain for foregrounds. Then the descent, the return to Antigua, and the smell of coffee at a local farm.
Chichicastenango market arrives in a rush of colour—fruit stalls, masks, Santo Tomás Church with copal smoke rising. The group moves through it, then on to Lake Atitlan. A boat crosses to Santiago Atitlan, where Altar Maximon draws curiosity. Later, at Panajachel, a Mayan model poses against sunset, the lake flat and gold. Another evening, from a special vantage, the lights of the city come up during blue hour—a counterpoint to Fuego’s raw energy.
The final days shift north. Sololá market on a market day, then a flight to Petén. Yaxha at sunset: howler monkeys call from the canopy, and the Red Hands Temple catches the last slanted light. Tikal at dawn is the anchor—temples emerg ing from mist, toucans crossing the plaza. Flores, a small island on Lake Petén Itzá, closes the loop with a quiet evening before the flight home.
Photographic opportunities
Light is the guide here. Start in Antigua: sunrise at Cerro de la Cruz yields soft sidelight on the Volcán de Agua; the city wakes below. Use the Santa Catalina Arch to layer colonial architecture with a passing tuk-tuk. At the market, harsh mid-morning sun calls for shadows and texture—fruit stalls, faces, smoke. Blue hour arrives twice: once at Acatenango, shooting Fuego’s eruptions against a darkening sky (every ten minutes, a new burst), and again from a rooftop in San Antonio Palopó, where the lake reflects the city lights. Volcanic landscapes benefit from a long lens to compress the plume, and from a wide angle at camp to include the cone. At Chichicastenango, go close on masks, then pull back for the church steps. Lake Atitlan sunsets are best with a silhouette—find a pier or a boat. Tikal at dawn: mist softens the jungle, and the main plaza catches golden light as spider monkeys cross the causeway. Yaxha sunset from the Red Hands Temple frames the temples through trees. In all cases, have a polariser handy for the high-altitude sky, and expect dust on the volcano trail.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to photographers who value a deliberate pace over a checklist. Days alternate between structured shoots—volcano camp, market, lake model—and free time to wander. The physical level is easy: the volcano hike is one hour with no technical demands; most locations are accessible by vehicle or boat. The tour suits those comfortable with early starts, varied altitudes (from 1,500m in Antigua to jungle heat in Petén), and shared accommodation at the volcano campsite. If you prefer to work with local subjects and wait for the right light rather than rush through a scene, this itinerary aligns with that approach.

A few kind words
Uncovering Colombia’s Magic with Tristan
I’ve been slowly reviewing all my shots from the Viva Colombia tour. It makes me relive all the incredible experiences Tristan put together for us! His love and enthusiasm for Colombia and its people was obvious. He had a good bond with all his drivers and guides, and he shines when he’s around children with his magic tricks. His people skills were excellent.
Tristan was responsive and went out of his way to make everyone happy. He took feedback to heart. I wanted to highlight how diligent he was. I have never been on a tour where the leader had prepared such a thorough talk with slides and examples of some of the creative concepts he was trying to teach.
I am so happy I managed to pull it together last minute to get onto this tour. It was SO worth it! There are a few Luminous Journey tours that I have an interest in so I’m not out of your hair yet.
Unveiling Beauty Through the Lens with Tristan
The Luminous Journeys “VIVA Colombia” trip was fantastic for photographic opportunities in a country that is still largely unexplored by travel photographers. Tristan was an enthusiastic leader offering insights into his creative approach to photographing Colombia, including its indigenous peoples. His patient and sensitive approach dealing with locals allowed participants learn and appreciate Colombia’s many diverse customs. There was a good balance between street & culture photography, nature/tropical birds, and landscapes.
In addition, Tristan’s willingness to help participants with the technical and artistic aspects of photography was greatly appreciated. Plus he’s just great fun! The trip was well organized and the hotels and food were superb. Overall, Viva Colombia! provided diverse photographic opportunities that would have broad appeal to photography enthusiasts looking for untrammeled travel adventure in a fascinating South American country.Highly recommended!
A Photographer’s Dream Tour with Tristan
From the very first communication Tristan was responsive and helpful, receptive to tailor making a travel and photographic experience that was exactly what I was looking for. As a passionate photographer himself, I knew I was speaking with a like-minded soul who understands the specific needs and wants of a fellow photographer.
The tour itself was brilliant. As well as being a capable and professional tour organizer, Tristan is great company and an interesting travel companion.
The special relationship he has built up over the years with the Kogui people and local guides enabled a very special opportunity to visit and photograph them, both culturally and photographically interesting, and a rare, much appreciated opportunity.
Combine this with Tristan’s ability to speak several languages fluently including the local one, and you’re onto a winner!
