El Chaltén Photography Tour: Fitz Roy Sunrise and Glacier Camping

Overview

This is a Patagonia photography journey built around El Chaltén and the Fitz Roy massif, where the work is done on foot and the rewards arrive with the light. You hike to Laguna Capri and the Fitz Roy Mirador, camp beneath the peaks, and rise with headlamps for sunrise at Cascada Escondida and Laguna de los Tres. Later days turn toward Laguna Torre, Mirador Maestri, and Loma Pliegue Tumbado, with golden-hour and night sessions along the way.

The trip closes with a full day at Perito Moreno Glacier, including a boat navigation beneath its calving ice wall.

Photographic opportunities

Across these twelve days, the itinerary moves through the heart of Los Glaciares National Park, with repeated chances to work the edges of the day. From Laguna Capri and the Poincenot campsite, you’ll photograph the Fitz Roy massif reflected in still water, then continue with night sessions near camp. A pre-dawn walk to Cascada Escondida and a headlamp ascent to Laguna de los Tres put you in position for first light on the peaks, while sunrise at Laguna Torre and a golden-hour session from Cañadón Río de las Vueltas offer different angles on the same spires. The Japanese Garden and Mirador Maestri add framed compositions of rock and ice. On the Loma Pliegue Tumbado hike, the view opens across the range. A scenic drive along Río Eléctrico and the Hostería El Pilar road provides roadside viewpoints without hiking. At Perito Moreno, the full-day tour and boat navigation bring you close to the calving ice wall. Throughout, expect changeable mountain weather and plan for wide, telephoto, and low-light work.

Who this journey is for

This itinerary will appeal to photographers who are happy to earn their frames. Days begin before dawn with headlamp walks to viewpoints such as Cascada Escondida and Laguna de los Tres, and nights return to the same landscapes for astrophotography. Much of the journey is spent camping at Laguna Capri, Poincenot and De Agostini, with picnic lunches in the field.

The trip is rated Moderate. The Laguna de los Tres ascent gains roughly 300 m over rocky terrain and is optional, with an alternative walk offered. El Chaltén suits mountain mavericks and photographers from beginner to expert.

A few kind words

Magnifique voyage

Merci Tristan !

Voyage extra-ordinaire

Tristan brilliantly rose to the challenge of organizing our immersive trip among the indigenous peoples of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. For four weeks, we were able to count on him and on his flexible and flawless organization. His detailed knowledge and understanding of the places we visited and the people we met enriched our daily discoveries. He was always attentive, considerate, cheerful, and generous. More than a guide, it felt like traveling with a friend.
