Costa Rica Photography Tour: Quetzal, Hummingbird and Cloud Forest
Overview
This 13-day small-group photography tour follows Costa Rica's flagship bird habitats, from the Talamanca Highlands to the northern lowlands. In the Savegre Valley, pre-dawn searches target the Resplendent Quetzal, with hummingbird-feeder sessions at Paraiso Quetzal Lodge and lodge-garden birding at Gema del Bosque.
The route continues to the Central Pacific for a White-crested Coquette search at Esquipulas Rainforest Reserve, a private Tarcoles River boat tour, and a Long-tailed Manakin lek at Orotina. Monteverde brings the Three-wattled Bellbird, while Arenal and Boca Tapada offer a King Vulture hide and White-collared Manakin displays.
Photographic opportunities
This is a journey built around time in the field, and the photographic subjects arrive in layers. In the Cartago foothills you work hummingbirds in good morning light—Black-bellied Hummingbird, White-bellied Mountaingem, Stripe-tailed Hummingbird—before the feeders at Paraiso Quetzal Lodge bring White-throated Mountain-Gem, Talamanca and Volcano Hummingbirds and the Fiery-throated Hummingbird close. Higher in the Savegre Valley, pre-dawn starts give you the best chance of the Resplendent Quetzal, with accessible feeder setups for Acorn Woodpecker, Flame-colored Tanager and Northern Emerald Toucanet, and dusk flocks of Band-tailed Pigeon and Barred Parakeet crossing the sky.
Down in the Central Pacific lowlands, flexible days support a broad target campaign, a private Tarcoles River boat, and the Long-tailed Manakin lek at Orotina. Monteverde adds feeder work and a dedicated watch for the Three-wattled Bellbird; further north, hides at The Nest and Maquenque offer displaying White-collared Manakins, King Vulture, and busy restaurant feeders. Bring long lenses and patience; the easy pace lets you stay with each subject.
Who this journey is for

It suits travellers comfortable with the stated easy physical level and a relaxed rhythm built around time in the field—pre-dawn quetzal searches, feeder sessions, and flexible target campaigns. Small groups of no more than eight keep the focus personal, making it a good fit for repeat guests who value a first-hand guide and shared, patient hours in good light.

Itinerary
Day 1
Gardens of Hotel Bouganvillea: A Gentle Birding Introduction
Arrival transfers bring you from the airport to Hotel Bouganvillea in San Jose, a garden-filled property serving as the tour base. Once the group has gathered, a late-afternoon walk winds through the flowering hedges and trees of these grounds. Lesson's Motmot, White-eared Ground-Sparrow, Mottled Owl and Crested Caracara are all possibilities in this relaxed setting. The easy pace offers a gentle introduction to Costa Rica's birdlife before a generic dinner.
Day 2
Birding and Photography in the Cartago Foothills from San Jose
Leaving San Jose, a drive to the Cartago Foothills reaches a zone where Central Valley and Caribbean influences meet, offering rich birdlife. The morning is target-driven, working in good light for Black-bellied Hummingbird, White-bellied Mountaingem and Stripe-tailed Hummingbird. On-site photography may include Montezuma Oropendola, Sunbittern and hummingbirds such as Violet Sabrewing, Green Thorntail and Green Hermit, with lodge mealtimes carrying their own birding possibilities. Hotel Quelitales serves as the base for a cloud-forest session, including a hide where Scaled Antpitta is described as reliable. Breakfast is included; lunch and dinner are generic.
Day 3
Foothill Bird Photography and Talamanca Hummingbirds
A morning photography session targets foothill specialties including Scaled Antpitta, Green-fronted Lancebill and Sooty-faced Finch. From the Cartago foothills, the route climbs into the Talamanca Mountains. After lunch, hummingbird feeders at Paraiso Quetzal Lodge draw White-throated Mountain-Gem, Lesser Violetear, Talamanca Hummingbird, Volcano Hummingbird and Fiery-throated Hummingbird. The journey continues to Gema del Bosque, a mountain lodge in the Savegre Valley highlands, where dinner and overnight rest follow.
Day 4
Resplendent Quetzal Search and Highland Birding in the Savegre Valley
Coffee, tea and snacks precede a short pre-dawn drive to seek the Resplendent Quetzal, followed by breakfast at the hotel. The grounds, gardens and open roads of Gema del Bosque then offer highland birding for species such as Golden-browed Chlorophonia, Black Guan and Long-tailed Silky Flycatcher. After lunch, a nearby feeder setup allows close early-afternoon photography of Acorn Woodpecker, Flame-colored Tanager and Northern Emerald Toucanet. Returning for more quetzal time, the day closes as Band-tailed Pigeon and Barred Parakeet cross the fading sky in loose flocks.
Day 5
Talamanca Highlands to the Central Pacific via Esquipulas Rainforest Reserve
A morning breakfast precedes the transfer from the Talamanca Highlands to the Central Pacific lowlands. At Esquipulas Rainforest Reserve, the focus is a flexible search for the endemic White-crested Coquette, using current local information to choose the most promising gardens for this sporadic visitor. Two nights in the Central Pacific lowlands allow time to pursue targets such as Fiery-billed Aracari, Marbled Wood-quail, Velvety Manakin, Crowned Woodnymph, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Turquoise Cotinga, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Charming Hummingbird, Thick-billed Euphonia, Spot-crowned Euphonia, Golden-naped Woodpecker and Band-tailed Barbthroat. Foresta Nature Resort provides a garden-rich base near the coast and the reserve.
Day 6
Esquipulas Rainforest Reserve and Central Pacific Lowlands Birding
Breakfast is included before heading to Esquipulas Rainforest Reserve, considered the best site for the endemic White-crested Coquette. Since this seasonal hummingbird visits gardens unpredictably, recent local information guides where to search. Two flexible nights in the Central Pacific lowlands allow pursuit of Fiery-billed Aracari, Marbled Wood-quail, Velvety Manakin, Crowned Woodnymph, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Turquoise Cotinga, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Charming Hummingbird, Thick-billed Euphonia, Spot-crowned Euphonia, Golden-naped Woodpecker and Band-tailed Barbthroat. Lunch and dinner are available, and Foresta Nature Resort serves as a garden-rich base near the coast and reserve.
Day 7
Tarcoles River Boat Tour and Long-tailed Manakin Lek en Route to Monteverde
A private Tarcoles River boat tour with a local captain explores prime photography spots for shorebirds, wading birds, kingfishers, parrots and raptors, with possible Yellow-naped Amazon, Roseate Spoonbill and Bare-throated Tiger Heron. The journey then continues from Esquipulas Rainforest Reserve toward Monteverde, detouring near Orotina for a Long-tailed Manakin lek, where males perform their display. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, and the night is spent at Koora Lodge, a cloud-forest lodge in Monteverde.
Day 8
Three-wattled Bellbird and Monteverde Feeders
Breakfast is included before a morning at a family-run avitourism project downslope of Monteverde, where feeders attract Crimson-collared Tanager, Northern Emerald Toucanet, Red-headed Barbet, Yellow-throated Euphonia, Montezuma Oropendola, Blue-gray Tanager and Hoffman's Woodpecker. Dedicated time is given to the male Three-wattled Bellbird, an altitudinal migrant and a highlight of the birding world. Lunch is followed by an afternoon feeder session at Monteverde Reserve for Coppery-headed Emerald, Purple-throated Mountain-Gem, Green-crowned Brilliant, Violet Sabrewing and possibly Magenta-throated Woodstar, with White-nosed Coatimundi often present. Dinner and Koora Lodge, a cloud-forest lodge in Monteverde, complete the day.
Day 9
Monteverde to Arenal: Black-crested Coquette Search at Arenal Observatory Lodge
After breakfast, transfer from Monteverde to the Arenal area and settle in at Arenal Observatory Lodge, the base for private-reserve trails and garden birding. In the lodge gardens, search for the Black-crested Coquette against volcano views, with Green Thorntail, Lovely Cotinga, Green Hermit, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Crowned Woodnymph and Scaly-breasted Hummingbird noted as garden or nearby possibilities; sightings are not guaranteed. Lunch and dinner are included as listed, and room plan and availability remain to be confirmed.
Day 10
Bird Photography from Arenal to Maquenque EcoLodge
Photographers travel from Arenal toward Maquenque EcoLodge in the Northern Tropical Lowlands, stopping at The Nest Nature Center. From a comfortable hide, males White-collared Manakins work their display perches in good light. Later, the center's feeders draw Crested Guan, Red-legged Honeycreeper, Keel-billed Toucan, Yellow-throated Toucan and Black-crested Coquette, while roosting Spectacled and Striped Owls inhabit the property. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included before the transfer continues to Maquenque EcoLodge.
Day 11
Bird Feeder and King Vulture Photography at Maquenque EcoLodge
Photography centres on the busy bird feeder at the Maquenque EcoLodge hotel restaurant, where Collared Aracari, Orange-chinned Parakeet, Brown-hooded Parrot, White-crowned Parrot, Shining Honeycreeper and Golden-hooded and Scarlet-rumped Tanagers gather for bananas. A visit to a King Vulture hide offers close views of Central America's largest vulture, with lunch on site. In the afternoon, a nearby garden draws a Cinnamon Woodpecker feeding on coconut alongside Long-billed Hermit, White-necked Jacobin and Scaly-breasted Hummingbird. The day closes with dinner at the lodge in the Northern Tropical Lowlands.
Day 12
Birding Back to San Jose via Hotel Bouganvillea
Breakfast is included before the journey turns toward San Jose, with birding along the way shaped by whatever remains on the target list. The drive stays flexible, allowing stops where attention is still needed. Lunch and dinner are covered at a generic cost. The night is spent at Hotel Bouganvillea, a garden-filled San Jose property that also serves as the tour base on the opening evening, closing the route where it started.
Day 13
Breakfast and Departure Transfer from Hotel Bouganvillea
A final morning at Hotel Bouganvillea includes breakfast as part of the package before the arranged transfer to the airport. The route moves from the hotel directly to the departure point, bringing the stay to a close with a straightforward journey. This experience centres on a relaxed meal and a smooth ride, without additional stops or activities. It is a simple conclusion focused on leaving the property and reaching the airport for onward travel.

A few kind words
You are in good hands with Tristan!
Tristan does an amazing job at putting together a culturally rich experience. He also does a great job at adapting to his clients needs and interests. He responds well to feedback. He is both professional and personable. I feel as though I had the opportunity not only to photograph many different elements of Colombia, but that I truly experienced the country and its culture. Our adventure took us from birding in the mountains outside of Cali, to visiting remote indigenous tribes, to visiting active fishing villages, to learning about local and historical musicians and customs, to beautiful settings in the mountains and along the seashore.
I give Tristan the highest recommendation as a guide for Colombia.
Colombia Birding Tour
I visited Colombia with Tristan of Remote Expeditions and would highly recommend him. He put together a wonderful itinerary with great knowledge of the areas and attention to details to give us a wonderful sampling of the country. He is personally very gentle and fun by nature and you will return home feeling very happy and satisfied. Whatever your special interest is, I’m sure he can make an itinerary to exceed your goals.
The Magical Mystery Tour!
In March 2026, I ventured out of my comfort zone and booked an 11 day photography tour with Tristan, through Remote Expeditions.
It was amazing. Truly remote, we visited several indigenous communities in the Sierra Nevada, first to meet them and find out a little about their way of life and second lay to photograph them. Additionally there were several opportunities for photographing birds, landscape and City Scenes in Cartagena.
We were fortunate enough to to be a small group, of two , which I was more that happy to pay a premium for. This gave us an intimate experience with the people we met along the way, additionally the 1:1 attention to our personal interests in photography was incredible.
Tristan was a real treat! He has spent the last 10 years living in and exploring this region of Colombia. He has cultivated relationships with the indigenous peoples of the area, and loves to share his understanding of their culture with you.
He structured the tour perfectly. He was organized, knowledgeable (about the land, its people and photography), compassionate, passionate and eager to share his vast internal encyclopedic information with you. When he didn’t know, he would quickly get you the information.
The remote places you get to, by 4x4, hiking and boating are exceptional. You could never find these places on your own.
Knowing little about Colombia, I was initially a little hesitant to take this tour. Having just returned, I wouldn’t hesitate for a nanosecond.
What ever type of tour you take with Tristan, you won’t be disappointed. He delivered everything he he promised, and a few amazing surprises more.
