Colombia Photography Tour: Andean Birding and Multicoloured Tanager
Overview
This 12-day birding journey through Colombia’s Central Andes and Chocó-Pacific slope is built around the endemic Multicoloured Tanager, with the full arc of Andean habitats from dry forest to elfin forest and páramo. Begin at Otún Quimbaya and Río Blanco, where antpitta feeding stations and mixed flocks are the focus. Cross the high Andes to Termales del Ruiz for the Equatorial Antpitta, hummingbird feeders and elfin forest trails. Three nights at Montezuma Rainforest Ecolodge Reserve in Tatamá National Park anchor the Chocó-Pacific birding, before the old Buenaventura road at Queremal and La Florida close the trip with the Multicoloured Tanager.
Photographic opportunities
This journey moves through an unusual range of Andean light and habitat, and the photographic opportunities shift with it. In the dry forest at Kaukita and the wetlands of Cameguadua, mornings are spent working scrub, grassland, pond edges and reeds, where herons, rails and kingfishers reward a patient, low-angle approach. Cloud forest days at Otún Quimbaya and Río Blanco bring mixed flocks through the canopy and mid-storey, plus managed antpitta feeding stations and hummingbird and fruit feeders that allow close-range work on Long-tailed Sylph, Collared and Bronzy Inca and Tourmaline Sunangel. Higher up, Los Nevados páramo and the elfin forest trails around Termales del Ruiz offer open volcanic scenery and high-altitude hummingbirds at the garden feeders.
At Montezuma, dawn 4WD drives up the summit road and slow walks through Tatamá’s elevations give time with tanagers, tapaculos and manakins. Laguna de Sonso adds wetland birds, and La Florida closes with feeders, soft first light and the Multicoloured Tanager’s forest.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to birders who want the full arc of Andean habitats, from dry forest to elfin forest, and who are happy with early mornings, quiet trails and long travel days. The pace is graded Easy, with gentle walking on forest roads and trails, though the Montezuma summit day begins around 05:00 with a ninety-minute 4WD drive, and the drive west to Montezuma and on to Cali each take most of a day. It suits photographers drawn to hummingbird feeders, antpitta feeding stations and mixed flocks in soft forest light.

Itinerary
Day 1
Pereira and the first endemics
A flight from Bogota Airport lands at Pereira Airport, followed by breakfast before morning birding at Kaukita Dry Forest Reserve, where scrub, grassland and pond edges on the city's western edge offer chances for Colombia's first endemics and dry-country specialities. After lunch, transfer to the guest house beside Otún Quimbaya, a reserve protecting the Otún river basin across well-preserved forest. The afternoon session at Otún Quimbaya follows quiet forest roads and shaded trails, with mixed flocks, woodcreepers and tanagers, adapting the route to recent sightings and changing light.
Day 2
Otún Quimbaya, Cameguadua Marsh and Recinto del Pensamiento
After breakfast, explore Otún Quimbaya Flora and Fauna Sanctuary with a local guide, walking forest trails and quiet roads for Cauca Guan, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow and mixed flocks. Drive north to Cameguadua Marsh, working wetland edges for herons, rails, parrotlets and kingfishers. Continue to Recinto del Pensamiento, a lodge at 1,950 m with forest-fringed grounds and very humid premontane forest. In afternoon and evening light, wander the grounds, where the on-site list reaches 192 species, offering a gentle way to find quiet forest birds before dinner.
Day 3
Río Blanco Reserve Birding and a Night at Recinto
After breakfast, a short transfer from Manizales reaches Río Blanco Reserve, run with FUNDEGAR. Morning centers on antpitta feeding stations, targeting Bicolored, Chestnut-crowned, Slate-crowned and Brown-banded Antpittas, with mixed flocks nearby. Forest trails bring woodcreepers, foliage-gleaners, barbtails, treerunners, tanagers and hemispingus. Afternoon slows around hummingbird and fruit feeders for Long-tailed Sylph, Collared Inca, Bronzy Inca and Tourmaline Sunangel, then cloud forest trails for Masked Saltator, Rusty-faced Parrot and Andean Motmot. Bamboo patches above the guest house offer Plushcap and Yellow-billed Cacique. Dinner precedes the return to Estelar Recinto del Pensamiento.
Day 4
Hacienda El Bosque, Los Nevados National Park and Termales del Ruiz
Breakfast precedes a transfer to Hacienda El Bosque, where the Equatorial Antpitta may appear at a managed feeding station, with Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan and tanagers nearby. The hummingbird garden draws Sword-billed Hummingbird, Tourmaline Sunangel and visiting flowerpiercers. After lunch, continue to Hotel Termales del Ruiz. Explore Los Nevados National Park's páramo for Buffy Helmetcrest, Rainbow-bearded Thornbill and Rufous-fronted Parakeet, then walk elfin forest trails seeking Tawny Antpitta. Feeders host Great Sapphirewing, Shining Sunbeam and Golden-breasted Puffleg. Thermal hot springs offer relaxation before dinner at the lodge.
Day 5
Journey west toward Montezuma Rainforest Ecolodge Reserve
An included breakfast precedes the long drive west past Manizales toward Pueblo Rico, a crossing of just under 100 miles taking four to five hours with birding stops and leg-stretches into the Chocó-Pacific country. A transfer continues to Montezuma Rainforest Ecolodge Reserve. After a picnic lunch, high-elevation forest exploration in the upper cloud forest follows, with the route adapted to recent sightings while searching for elusive species and mixed flocks in Tatamá, a premier birding destination.
Day 6
Montezuma Summit Road and Tatamá Birding
A pre-dawn 4WD climb up the Montezuma Summit Road leads to an army base and communications centre, where clear skies can reveal Cerro Tatamá. After a packed breakfast with hot coffee, birding unfolds in the high cloud forests of Tatamá National Park, targeting Gold-ringed Tanager, Black-and-gold Tanager, tapaculos, flowerpiercers and mountain tanagers. A packed lunch keeps the search going before descending to warmer Chocó forests for Club-winged Manakin, Beautiful Jay, Chocó Vireo, tanagers, woodcreepers and flycatchers. The day returns to Montezuma Rainforest Ecolodge Reserve near Manizales.
Day 7
Cloud Forest Birding Along the Montezuma Road
Explore the mid-elevation cloud forests of Tatamá National Park along the Montezuma Road, where shifting habitats draw remarkable Chocó and Andean birdlife. Walking at a relaxed pace, watch for mixed flocks in the canopy and regional specialties including Toucan Barbet, Black-chinned Mountain Tanager and Orange-breasted Fruiteater. A packed lunch keeps you in the field through the day's bird activity. Breakfast is included, with generic lunch and dinner available. Return to the Montezuma Rainforest Ecolodge Reserve near Manizales, a lush cloud forest setting with wildlife and Andean views.
Day 8
Cauca Valley Route to Cali and Araucana Lodge
A long transfer of roughly 180 miles runs through the Cauca Valley toward Cali, filling most of the day with lunch, birding stops and leg-stretches. At Laguna de Sonso, Colombia's largest remaining natural wetland, a local guide leads trails and observation points through lagoons, reedbeds and gallery forest, with the Ruby-topaz Hummingbird a standout among herons, jacanas, kingfishers, ibises and raptors. Afternoon and early evening unfold in the Araucana Lodge gardens, feeders and bird tables, where Southern Lapwing, Eared Dove, Ruddy Ground-dove, Squirrel Cuckoo, Andean Motmot, Red-headed Barbet and Acorn Woodpecker appear while hummingbirds work the flowers.
Day 9
Birding the Queremal and Old Buenaventura Road
An early drive reaches Queremal, gateway to the old Buenaventura road, a heavily forested route once famed among birders and now quiet and traffic-free. The day is spent working this Chocó-Pacific circuit, passing open farmland and hilly pasture before descending gradually to lower elevations and pausing at promising spots. Expect a long list: parrots, hermits, barbets, flycatchers, antbirds, tanagers and the Toucan Barbet, with excellent Tangara tanager viewing. Breakfast is included, lunch and dinner are separate. A late-afternoon transfer returns to Araucana Lodge.
Day 10
La Florida Birdwatching at El Bosque de las Aves
A pre-dawn start at La Florida's feeders brings hummingbirds, tanagers and flowerpiercers, with a chance of the resident Chestnut Wood-Quail. Birding around the El 18 farmstead and Bosque de las Aves targets the endemic Multicoloured Tanager alongside Tangara tanagers. In the afternoon, watch for the elusive Little Tinamou, then photograph forest hummingbirds at flowering plants, perhaps with woodcreepers, foliage-gleaners or antpittas. A transfer to Cali Airport follows for the flight to Bogotá and the overnight connection home.

Unveiling Beauty Through the Lens with Tristan
The Luminous Journeys “VIVA Colombia” trip was fantastic for photographic opportunities in a country that is still largely unexplored by travel photographers. Tristan was an enthusiastic leader offering insights into his creative approach to photographing Colombia, including its indigenous peoples. His patient and sensitive approach dealing with locals allowed participants learn and appreciate Colombia’s many diverse customs. There was a good balance between street & culture photography, nature/tropical birds, and landscapes.
In addition, Tristan’s willingness to help participants with the technical and artistic aspects of photography was greatly appreciated. Plus he’s just great fun! The trip was well organized and the hotels and food were superb. Overall, Viva Colombia! provided diverse photographic opportunities that would have broad appeal to photography enthusiasts looking for untrammeled travel adventure in a fascinating South American country.Highly recommended!
A Photographer’s Dream Tour with Tristan
From the very first communication Tristan was responsive and helpful, receptive to tailor making a travel and photographic experience that was exactly what I was looking for. As a passionate photographer himself, I knew I was speaking with a like-minded soul who understands the specific needs and wants of a fellow photographer.
The tour itself was brilliant. As well as being a capable and professional tour organizer, Tristan is great company and an interesting travel companion.
The special relationship he has built up over the years with the Kogui people and local guides enabled a very special opportunity to visit and photograph them, both culturally and photographically interesting, and a rare, much appreciated opportunity.
Combine this with Tristan’s ability to speak several languages fluently including the local one, and you’re onto a winner!
