Colombia Photography Tour: Bogotá, Coffee Region and Cartagena
Overview
This is a 14-day photographic journey through Colombia, moving from Bogotá's highland light to the Caribbean coast. In the capital, markets, La Candelaria's colonial streets, the Museo del Oro, and the Monserrate summit offer layered subjects. The coffee region brings family finca life, a personal tree planting, and the wax palms of Valle de Cocora, with Salento and Filandia's painted balconies close by.
Antioquia's green hills lead to Jardín, the Cueva del Esplendor waterfall, and the chance to observe Andean cock-of-the-rock at Jardín Rocas. Medellín's Plaza Botero and Comuna 3 murals give way to Guatapé's zócalos and El Peñol. Cartagena's historic centre and two nights on Isla Múcura close the route.
Photographic opportunities
This journey moves through unusually varied light and terrain, from Bogotá at 3,152 metres to the Caribbean. In the capital, La Candelaria's colonial facades, Plaza Bolívar and the gold of the Museo del Oro reward careful, low-light work, while the Monserrate ascent opens wide views over the city. In the coffee region, a family finca offers the human rhythms of cultivation and harvest; at Valle de Cocora, wax palms rise to 70 metres through cloud forest beside the Río Quindío, where shifting mist and filtered light suit slow, deliberate compositions. Jardín's colonial streets and the rural trail to Cueva del Esplendor, with its waterfall and natural pool, add water, rock and green Antioquian texture. Medellín's Plaza Botero and the murals and markets of Comuna 3 bring colour and street life; Guatapé's zócalos and reservoir, Santa Fe de Antioquia's wooden shutters and filigree workshop, and Cartagena's historic centre and mangroves complete the range.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to photographers drawn to variety: markets and museums in Bogotá, family coffee production and cloud forest in the coffee region, the green hills of Antioquia, and Cartagena's colonial streets before two nights on Isla Múcura. The pace is moderate, with guided days and independent windows, longer road transfers and gentle beach walks. The Cueva del Esplendor hike involves dirt paths, wetter sections, and roughly 250–300 metres of elevation gain. Optional experiences such as the El Peñol climb, the Guatapé boat cruise, and Isla Múcura activities can be confirmed with the final travel arrangements.

Itinerary
Day 1
Bogotá Arrival and Casa Deco Welcome
Arriving in Bogotá, a transfer from the airport brings you to Casa Deco, roughly 45 minutes away and near the capital's historic centre. After checking in and settling into your rooms, take a short break to relax. Later, join a tour orientation, the first meeting where Tristan outlines the itinerary's key points and shares initial tips for making the most of the trip. The day closes with a generic dinner, and Casa Deco offers art deco-inspired rooms, personalized service, and a location near Bogotá's cultural attractions.
Day 2
Bogotá Markets, Museums, and La Candelaria
Breakfast starts the day before a guided walk through Bogotá's markets and La Candelaria, tasting local products and passing colourful houses, colonial architecture, Plaza Bolívar, the Capitol, City Hall, Palace of Justice, Catedral Primada, and Casa Nariño. Fundación Botero displays Fernando Botero's paintings and rounded sculptures with works by Picasso and Braque. Museo del Oro holds the world's largest collection of pre-Columbian gold objects. Lunch and dinner are included separately. Monserrate rises by funicular or cable car to 3,152 metres for capital views and pilgrimage. Casa Deco provides art deco-inspired rooms near cultural attractions.
Day 3
Pereira, a Family Coffee Finca, and Hacienda Combia
Breakfast is included before a transfer from Casa Deco to Bogotá Airport for the domestic flight to Pereira, gateway to Colombia's coffee region. From Pereira airport, continue by road to a traditional family-run finca, where you hear about the family's history and coffee cultivation and production, plant your own coffee tree, and share lunch with your hosts. Later, settle in at Hacienda Combia, a rural-style hotel with a swimming pool and garden, a comfortable base for the family finca visit and upcoming Valle de Cocora, Salento, and Filandia.
Day 4
Valle de Cocora, Salento, and Filandia
A cloud-forest walk beside the Río Quindío opens the day in Valle de Cocora, where wax palms—Colombia's national tree—rise as high as 70 metres. An optional Willys Jeep approach adds a local transport story. Salento follows, with colonial architecture and colourful balconies, then Filandia, a small mountain village of painted houses and café-lined square. Breakfast and a Hacienda Combia base frame the route, with lunch and dinner available. Transfers between the valley, villages, and hacienda take roughly three hours in total.
Day 5
Jardín and Jardín Rocas
After an included breakfast, a roughly five-hour road transfer from Hacienda Combia crosses Antioquia's shifting landscapes to reach Jardín. On foot, an expert guide leads through colonial streets and picturesque corners, covering Parque Libertador, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, and traditional cafés that reflect this Colombian Heritage Town's history and welcoming character. Later, if timing allows, a short walk from the main square reaches Jardín Rocas Nature Reserve, open 15:00–18:00, where Andean cock-of-the-rock may be observed; entry is 15,000 COP per person and sightings are never guaranteed. Casa Passiflora serves as the Jardín base for two nights.
Day 6
Cueva del Esplendor Excursion from Jardín
A collective Willys Jeep carries you from Jardín through green Antioquian countryside toward the Cueva del Esplendor area. At a traditional finca, an arepa and aguapanela welcome precedes a rural hike along dirt paths and meadows with moderate elevation gain. A waterfall drops through rock into a natural pool, where an optional swim is possible. You return by collective transport to Jardín, based at Casa Passiflora for two nights near the town's colourful streets and rural landscapes.
Day 7
Santa Fe de Antioquia and Medellín via Puente de Occidente
A road transfer from Jardín winds through Antioquia's mountains to Santa Fe de Antioquia, where the historic centre reveals paved streets and coloured wooden shutters. A filigree workshop shows the goldsmithing tradition, then the route crosses the 291-metre Puente de Occidente above the Río Cauca. After lunch, the car continues to Medellín, arriving in El Poblado at Lettera, the base for guided time in the city and Comuna 3 / Manrique. Breakfast and dinner are included.
Day 8
Medellín: History, Art, and Manrique
A guided introduction to Medellín pairs the city's difficult past with its contemporary identity, tracing Plaza Botero, Parque de las Luces, Palacio Nacional, and Junín, where public art meets the historic centre. The route then climbs into Comuna 3, also called Manrique, a hillside neighbourhood of city views, colourful murals, busy markets, and everyday creativity that offers another perspective on Medellín. Based at Lettera in El Poblado, this day moves from breakfast through guided historic and contemporary exploration to lunch and dinner, balancing the centre's landmarks with Manrique's cultural heritage.
Day 9
El Peñol, Guatapé, and Cartagena
After included breakfast, a road transfer runs from Medellín to El Peñol and Guatapé, roughly four hours for the full hotel–El Peñol–Guatapé route before continuing to the airport. At El Peñol, the 649-step climb is optional. A guided Guatapé village and zócalos visit explores colourful façades and raised reliefs, followed by free time. An optional Embalse de Guatapé boat cruise lasts about 45 minutes. Lunch and dinner are generic. Then transfer to Medellín airport, fly to Cartagena, and transfer to Casa Cytia.
Day 10
Cartagena Historic Centre and Coastal Options
Explore Cartagena's historic centre with a guide, tracing its layered past through churches, the monastery of San Pedro Claver, the cathedral, and colonial houses, with the afternoon free. Optional outings include a La Boquilla community and mangrove boat trip to observe resident and migratory birds and learn local traditions, or a French-speaking guided visit to the Convento de La Popa and the Fort of San Felipe. Casa Cytia serves as the Cartagena base before and after Isla Múcura.
Day 11
Boat to Isla Múcura and Punta Faro
Breakfast is included before a roughly 20-minute transfer from Casa Cytia to Cartagena port. From there, a collective boat crosses to Isla Múcura in about two hours. At Punta Faro, settle in and orient yourself along the beach and around the island, where clear water and pale sand invite slow time by the sea. Optional activities include snorkelling, sea kayaking, diving, nearby-island visits, and ecological walks, shaped by weather, energy, and group interests.
Day 12
Isla Múcura at Leisure
A second day on Isla Múcura unfolds at an easy pace, with breakfast included before time on the beach, gentle sand walks, and short swims in the surrounding sea. Optional activities can be arranged locally if you prefer more movement, or the hours can stay unstructured. Lunch and dinner are available at a generic cost. Punta Faro (Mucura) provides a tranquil island escape with pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and a serene setting suited to a rejuvenating getaway.
Day 13
Boat Back to Cartagena and Casa Cytia
After breakfast, a collective boat carries you from Isla Múcura to Cartagena port, a crossing of roughly two hours, followed by a transfer of about 20 minutes to Casa Cytia. The afternoon is free: you might join an optional one-hour salsa lesson, privately or in a small group, or later take an optional Cartagena Bay sunset yacht cruise with an open bar. Lunch and dinner are generic, then Casa Cytia becomes your base again.
Day 14
Getsemaní Breakfast, Bazurto Market, and Cartagena Airport Transfer
Begin with an included breakfast, or choose an optional guided morning in Getsemaní, meeting your guide at a local restaurant before wandering the neighbourhood and Bazurto Market. There, colourful, lively aisles reveal Cartagena's food traditions, shaped by Indigenous, Spanish, and African influences; the market operates Monday to Saturday. Afterwards, transfer from Casa Cytia to Cartagena airport, roughly 20 minutes away.

A few kind words
Authentic and well organized expedition in an indigenous tribe
Tristan guided me through the mountains of Sierra Nevada and facilitated all the details for meeting a kogi tribe.
It was a work trip as I was working on a very specific topic ( panela) and Tristan took care of all the details and was very
understanding.
The whole experience felt very authentic, and overall Tristan is so passionate
about what he does it's hard not to have a blast during the trip.
Fantastic trip off the beaten path
Tristan is a very knowledgeable guide and photographer, and he is also very personable. Traveling with him was a very nice experience and we had lots of laughs too!
The trip was flawlessly organized and Tristan understood our needs very well, tailoring the itinerary to ensure we had the best experience possible. Thanks to him, we discovered Colombia off the beaten path.
Last but not least, I have done a number of photography trips and Tristan is probably the most dedicated teacher I have traveled with. He is really passionate about passing on his knowledge and passion about photography.
I will certainly book another trip with Remote Expeditions in the near future.
Colombia Photography Tour 2026
Top notch photographic experience for enthusiasts of nature, culture, and portraits. Tristan is well connected to the area and the local communities with a specialty in indigenous tribes and less-visited areas. Additionally, he is an excellent teacher and will provide incredibly helpful instruction on exposure, lighting, and composition. Our tour was incredibly well organized and ran on time, with full days of photography. I fully recommend Remote Expeditions for your photographic travels!
