Peru Manu Road and Amazon Lowlands Photography Tour
Overview
This is southern Peru's classic birding crossing, slowed to the pace it deserves. The route begins on Lima's coast, flies over the Andes to Cusco, then works east and down: the coastal wetlands of Pantanos de Villa, the boat waters off Pucusana, the highland target species at Huacarpay Lake, and the cloud forest of Wayquecha Station and Ajanaco Pass.
From there the Manu Road unfolds through mixed-species flocks toward Cock of the Rock Lodge, where three full days and a lek visit anchor the middle of the trip. The lowlands follow by boat — Amazonia Lodge's trails and feeders, Pantiacolla's bamboo and terra firme forest, then three days at Manu Wildlife Center for the Macaw Clay Lick, the Canopy Tower and Cocha Blanco Lake.
Photographic opportunities
The journey moves through two very different photographic worlds. On the coast, Pantanos de Villa offers water, reeds and shoreline for a gentle first session, while the boat trip at Pucusana brings open water and rocky shoreline where the land meets the Pacific. In the high Andes, Huacarpay Lake and its puna-edge habitat reward an early start, and the climb toward Wayquecha Station and Ajanaco Pass works through upper cloud forest, where mist and changing light shape the mountain forest landscapes.
Along the Manu Road, mixed-species flocks and descending elevations give repeated full days from Cock of the Rock Lodge, with a morning at the Cock-of-the-Rock lek. Below Atalaya, the river corridor becomes part of the birding experience, and at Amazonia Lodge the feeders allow close, patient study of lowland birds while trails cover the forest itself. At Pantiacolla, bamboo, terra firme and riparian forest each carry different birds. At Manu Wildlife Center, the Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick, the canopy platform and Cocha Blanco Lake offer patient, watchful sessions — scanning clay bank, canopy and water for movement.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to birders who want the classic southern Peru crossing taken at a measured pace. The tour is rated Easy, and its rhythm is built around one to three nights at each lodge, with the longest stays at Cock of the Rock Lodge and Manu Wildlife Center — so the cloud forest and the lowland Amazon each get repeated full days rather than a single rushed morning. Days are spent birding along the Manu Road, on lodge trails and feeders, at a Cock of the Rock lek, and from a canopy platform. The lowland section is largely boat-based from Atalaya onward.

Itinerary
Day 1
Lima Arrival and Miraflores Transfer
Arriving in Peru, a private transfer meets you at Lima Airport and carries you along the coastal road toward the Miraflores waterfront neighbourhood. The drive offers a first glimpse of the city's Pacific edge before you reach your selected hotel in Lima, where the arrangements for the stay are still to be confirmed. This straightforward arrival transfer keeps the focus on settling in after your flight, with the Miraflores district as your base for exploring the capital at your own pace.
Day 2
Pantanos de Villa Wetlands and Pucusana Boat Trip Before Flying to Cusco
Birding opens at Pantanos de Villa, a coastal wetland near Lima where reeds, water and shoreline allow an easy, observational session. A local market lunch precedes the boat trip at Pucusana, a fishing port where open water and rocky shoreline offer a different rhythm and the birds of the Pacific edge. Afterward, a flight from Lima to Cusco leads to a selected hotel for an unhurried evening at altitude, easing into the higher birding ahead.
Day 3
Birding Huacarpay Lake en Route to Wayquecha Station
Breakfast is included before an early birding stop at Huacarpay Lake, targeting its special local species within highland lake and puna-edge habitat. The road transfer from Cusco continues toward Wayquecha Station along the Manu Road cloud forest, with the drive itself treated as habitat and shared with birding. Stops follow the birds rather than the clock throughout the full day, ending at Wayqecha Cloud Forest Biological Station for the first night in the cloud forest. A generic lunch in a local market and a generic dinner are available at additional cost.
Day 4
Birding the Manu Road to Ajanaco Pass

The route starts and ends at Wayquecha Lodge Station, with breakfast included before setting out. Later, a generic lunch in a local market is available for 15 USD, and a generic dinner for 35 USD. Wayqecha Cloud Forest Biological Station, in Paucartambo within the Cusco Region, offers misty cloud forest, vibrant biodiversity and canopy views.

From Atalaya, a birding boat transfer continues along the Alto Madre de Dios to Amazonia Lodge in Puerto Maldonado, a rainforest base known for Madre de Dios avian diversity. Lunch and dinner are generic, paid locally.

A few kind words
