El Chaltén Photography Tour: Fitz Roy Sunrise and Glacier Camping
Overview
This is a Patagonia photography journey built around El Chaltén and the Fitz Roy massif, where the work is done on foot and the rewards arrive with the light. You hike to Laguna Capri and the Fitz Roy Mirador, camp beneath the peaks, and rise with headlamps for sunrise at Cascada Escondida and Laguna de los Tres. Later days turn toward Laguna Torre, Mirador Maestri, and Loma Pliegue Tumbado, with golden-hour and night sessions along the way.
The trip closes with a full day at Perito Moreno Glacier, including a boat navigation beneath its calving ice wall.
Photographic opportunities
Across these twelve days, the itinerary moves through the heart of Los Glaciares National Park, with repeated chances to work the edges of the day. From Laguna Capri and the Poincenot campsite, you’ll photograph the Fitz Roy massif reflected in still water, then continue with night sessions near camp. A pre-dawn walk to Cascada Escondida and a headlamp ascent to Laguna de los Tres put you in position for first light on the peaks, while sunrise at Laguna Torre and a golden-hour session from Cañadón Río de las Vueltas offer different angles on the same spires. The Japanese Garden and Mirador Maestri add framed compositions of rock and ice. On the Loma Pliegue Tumbado hike, the view opens across the range. A scenic drive along Río Eléctrico and the Hostería El Pilar road provides roadside viewpoints without hiking. At Perito Moreno, the full-day tour and boat navigation bring you close to the calving ice wall. Throughout, expect changeable mountain weather and plan for wide, telephoto, and low-light work.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to photographers who are happy to earn their frames. Days begin before dawn with headlamp walks to viewpoints such as Cascada Escondida and Laguna de los Tres, and nights return to the same landscapes for astrophotography. Much of the journey is spent camping at Laguna Capri, Poincenot and De Agostini, with picnic lunches in the field.
The trip is rated Moderate. The Laguna de los Tres ascent gains roughly 300 m over rocky terrain and is optional, with an alternative walk offered. El Chaltén suits mountain mavericks and photographers from beginner to expert.

Itinerary
Day 1
Transfer from El Calafate to El Chaltén
A drive across the Patagonian steppe carries you from El Calafate toward El Chaltén, the small settlement beneath the granite peaks of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. The route crosses open country where guanaco and Andean condor are among the wildlife the region is known for, and the roadside offers wide views of the changing landscape. On arrival, your guide meets you and the group settles in at Senderos Aparts & Suites, with an orientation to the days ahead. Lunch and dinner are covered, marking the transition into the walking and photography that follows.
Day 2
Laguna Capri and the Fitz Roy Mirador
Walking from camp into the Laguna Capri basin, the trail opens onto still water backed by the granite walls of Fitz Roy. The day is spent on foot: a hike to the lagoon, time set aside for photography along its shore, then an easy walk to the Fitz Roy Mirador for wider views of the massif and the surrounding lenga forest. After dark, the area near the Capri campsite becomes a base for night photography, working with the southern sky above the peaks. The setting is known for its mountain scenery rather than for any particular wildlife.
Day 3
Cascada Escondida and Poincenot, Patagonia
A headlamp-lit walk through the pre-dawn dark leads to Cascada Escondida, where the first light reaches the falls and the surrounding Patagonian landscape. From there the route continues to the Poincenot campsite on an easy two-and-a-half-hour hike, with pauses for the scenery along the way. The Japanese garden near camp offers close subjects among the trees and water, and after dark the same area suits night photography. The day is built around walking, watching and working slowly with a camera.
Day 4
Laguna de los Tres and Poincenot
A headlamp departure up rocky terrain leads to Laguna de los Tres, where sunrise light reaches the iconic lake below Fitz Roy. The climb gains roughly 300 m over one and a half to two and a half hours, the most demanding ascent of the trip; those who opt out take an alternative walk to a quieter lagoon. From Camping Poincenot, the day closes with a sunset photo activity near camp, working the changing light over the surrounding landscape.
Day 5
Hiking to Laguna Torre and De Agostini Campsite
A hike from Poincennot leads through Patagonian terrain toward Laguna Torre, where the trail opens onto glacial water and the granite peaks above it. Near the De Agostini campsite, the photography session works the changing light over the laguna and the surrounding ridges, with time to set up compositions as clouds move across the valley. After packing up belongings and settling in at Campamento De Agostini, the evening closes with dinner at camp, positioned for another pass at the landscape.
Day 6
Laguna Torre and Mirador Maestri
Sunrise at Laguna Torre, where the still water holds the snow-capped peaks of the Cerro Torre range. A relaxed morning follows at Agostini Campsite, walking its trails with the mountains close on every side. Later, the hike to Mirador Maestri climbs to a higher vantage over the lagoon and the surrounding Patagonian landscape. Photographers will find the changing light on the peaks and the wide views the main subjects, with the area known for its Andean condors and other high-country birds. Breakfast and dinner are covered.
Day 7
Laguna Torre Sunrise and Rio de las Vueltas Sunset
Sunrise at Laguna Torre brings first light onto the lake and the granite spires above it, a quiet session before the hike from Agostini Campsite back to El Chalten. The trail crosses open Patagonian steppe, with the massif holding the skyline for much of the walk. In the evening, a golden-hour session from Cañadon Rio de las Vueltas follows the final light across the canyon walls and the mountain spires, the river below catching the last of it. The day closes at Senderos Aparts & Suites in El Chalten.
Day 8
Hiking and Photography at Loma Pliegue Tumbado
A hike up to Loma Pliegue Tumbado opens wide views over the surrounding Patagonian landscape, a rocky, open hillside where photographers work with the changing light across the steppe and distant peaks. Time on the summit is given over to photography, framing the terrain and the birds and wildlife that inhabit the area. The exposed ridge and its broad outlook make it a place to slow down and watch, camera ready, as conditions shift. An early breakfast and a dinner back at Senderos Aparts & Suites frame the day.
Day 9
Río Eléctrico to Chorillo del Salto
Following the Río Eléctrico and the Hostería El Pilar road by private vehicle, viewpoints open toward Lago del Desierto, the day shaped around chasing the light rather than covering ground on foot. A walk through native forest then leads to the base of Chorillo del Salto, where the waterfall and its surrounding woodland reward a slower, close look with a camera. No hiking is required beyond that forest path, and the drive itself keeps the landscape in view throughout. Lunch and dinner round out a day spent between river, road and waterfall.
Day 10
Sunrise at Río de las Vueltas and El Calafate
A sunrise photography session from the Río de las Vueltas canyon captures the first golden light on the Fitz Roy massif, its granite faces rising above the river valley. The canyon's open views and shifting dawn light reward a patient, wide-angle approach. Later, the route turns south across the Patagonian steppe to El Calafate, where the day settles at Hotel Posada Los Alamos. The steppe itself is the subject on the road, with its dry scrub and big skies. No wildlife was recorded for this day's activities.
Day 11
Glaciar Perito Moreno
Glacier ice dominates the day at Perito Moreno, where the walkways overlook a wall of blue-white ice calving into Lago Argentino. A full-day tour follows the boardwalks before a boat navigation brings the face closer, close enough to watch bergs break away and drift across the water. The surrounding Patagonian steppe and lenga forest frame the glacier, and the day closes with the transfer back to El Calafate.
Day 12
Calafate Airport Transfer
A final free morning in Calafate allows for a last photo session or a review of images from the tour before hotel check-out and the transfer to Calafate Airport. The surrounding Patagonian steppe, open and wind-shaped, frames the town and its approaches. No species were recorded for this day, so the focus stays on the landscape and the quiet close of the photography tour.
