Galápagos Land-Based Wildlife Photography Tour: Island Birding
Overview
This is a Galápagos trip built around looking, not listing. Over eight days you cross San Cristóbal, Isabela, and Santa Cruz, with mornings shaped by light and wildlife rather than a schedule. On San Cristóbal, frigatebirds soar and bathe at Cerro Tijeretas; a full-day yacht excursion follows availability toward Española, Punta Pitt, or Kicker Rock. Isabela brings flamingo lagoons, the Arnaldo Tupiza tortoise center, and an 8 km hike to the rim of Sierra Negra's caldera. Santa Cruz adds highland tortoises, lava tunnels, and two day tours confirmed per availability. Snorkeling appears most days, and the animals are famously approachable.
Photographic opportunities
Across eight days, the route keeps subjects close and the pace unhurried. On San Cristóbal, frigatebirds soar, bathe and rest in the trees at Cerro Tijeretas, with the endemic San Cristóbal Mockingbird in the dry coastal scrub. The full-day yacht excursion, confirmed according to availability, may turn toward Española's seabird colonies and the seasonal Waved Albatross, Punta Pitt's three booby species, or the walls of Kicker Rock, where snorkeling can bring sea lions, turtles, rays and reef fish within range of an underwater camera.
On Isabela, work the lagoon edges of the Puerto Villamil wetlands while flamingos feed in the shallows, then photograph marine iguanas on black lava and whitetip reef sharks resting in the calm tintoreras channel. The Sierra Negra hike trades wildlife for scale: lava fields, highland vegetation and a caldera roughly 9 km across. Santa Cruz adds humid forest, lava tunnels and giant tortoises, wild in the highlands and at the breeding center.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to photographers who want to work with tame wildlife both above and below the water, and to birders moving through seabird colonies, Darwin's finches, mockingbirds, and the seasonal Waved Albatross. The pace is moderate, with early transfer mornings and time on the water, so it suits travellers comfortable with that rhythm. Groups are kept small, up to 8 guests, and visiting is guided and park-regulated throughout.
Highlights
- Frigatebirds soaring, bathing, and resting in the trees at Cerro Tijeretas, with the endemic San Cristóbal Mockingbird nearby
- A full-day yacht excursion whose destination follows availability: Española's seabird colonies and seasonal Waved Albatross (mainly April–December), the three booby species of Punta Pitt, or snorkeling the walls of Kicker Rock
- Whitetip Reef Sharks resting in the narrow "tintoreras" lava channel, a ten-minute boat ride from Puerto Villamil, with Galápagos Penguin possible along the rocks
- Galápagos Flamingos feeding in shallow lagoons on the shrimp and crustaceans that give them their pink color
- Sierra Negra's caldera rim — about 9 km across at roughly 1,200 m, reached on an 8 km guided hike
- Giant tortoises twice: at the Arnaldo Tupiza breeding center and roaming free in a Santa Cruz highland reserve

Following the route
The journey moves gradually through 3 distinct overnight bases.
Route shown schematically for orientation.
Itinerary
Day 1
San Cristóbal Arrival and Afternoon Exploration
A flight from Quito brings you to San Cristóbal, where an included lunch is followed by an afternoon that pairs the Gianni Arismendy Interpretation Center with a gentle walk to Cerro Tijeretas. Exhibits at the center cover natural history, human history, and conservation, offering useful orientation. The Cerro Tijeretas viewpoint looks over the bay and open Pacific, with frigatebirds often overhead and the endemic San Cristóbal Mockingbird in the dry coastal ecosystem. Dinner is included, and the night is spent at Casa Opuntia Hotel in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
Day 2
Yacht Excursion to Española, Punta Pitt or Kicker Rock
A full-day yacht excursion departs after breakfast, with the destination chosen based on availability. Options include Española Island, known for seabird colonies and coastal landscapes; Punta Pitt on San Cristóbal, where three booby species share volcanic terrain; or Kicker Rock, a volcanic formation with nesting tropicbirds and boobies. Each route combines guided walks with snorkeling, where tropical fish, sea turtles, rays and sea lions may appear. Lunch and dinner are included, with lodging at Casa Opuntia Hotel in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.
Day 3
Isabela Flight, Puerto Villamil Wetlands and Las Tintoreras
A shared inter-island flight from San Cristóbal reaches Puerto Villamil on Isabela in about 30 minutes, with the Isabela entrance fee included. Breakfast precedes a morning wetlands birding trail through coastal lagoons and mangroves, targeting Galápagos Flamingo at Flamingo Lagoon plus Paint-billed Crake, Galápagos Rail, Galápagos Mockingbird and Common Cactus-Finch. A mangrove-and-lava trail leads to the Arnaldo Tupiza Giant Tortoise Breeding Center. After lunch, the Las Tintoreras Bay Tour explores islets, lava channels and Marine Iguana colonies. Dinner and two nights at Isamar Hotel follow.
Day 4
Sierra Negra Volcano Hike on Isabela Island
Breakfast precedes a guided Sierra Negra Volcano Caldera Hike through Isabela's highlands, climbing gradually past lava fields and highland vegetation toward a rim roughly 9 km wide. Trail possibilities include Vermilion Flycatcher, Galápagos Mockingbird, Large Ground Finch, Galápagos Martin, and perhaps a Short-eared Owl, plus giant tortoises and lava lizards. Crater views open across the caldera before lunch is served during the excursion and the group returns to the coast. Hat and high-SPF sunscreen help in the exposed volcanic landscape. Dinner and two nights at Isamar Hotel in Puerto Villamil complete the stay.
Day 5
Speedboat to Santa Cruz and the Highlands
Cross the Bolívar Channel by speedboat ferry from Puerto Villamil to Puerto Ayora, then continue into the highlands after breakfast. Walk among Los Gemelos twin craters, where collapsed magma chambers sit within humid forest alive with Galápagos Flycatcher, Small Ground Finch, Galápagos Dove and Galápagos Mockingbird. At El Chato ranch in the Santa Cruz Highlands Giant Tortoise Reserve, observe giant tortoises in the wild and Darwin's finches. Lunch precedes a Galápagos lava tunnel visit revealing how cooled lava left underground passages. Dinner follows, with three nights at Santa Fe Hotel in Puerto Ayora.
Day 6
Neighboring Island Excursion from Puerto Ayora
After breakfast, choose from shared yacht tours depending on availability. North Seymour Island with Las Bachas Beach brings a naturalist guide, Palo Santo trails, Blue-footed Booby colonies and frigatebird nesting sites, plus a lagoon walk. Alternatively, South Plaza Island with Punta Carrión offers plunge-diving boobies, Darwin's finches among Opuntia cacti and Nazca Boobies on the cliffs. A Bartolomé and Sullivan Bay trip climbs to Pinnacle Rock views, with Galápagos Penguins and snorkeling. Lunch and dinner are included, with lodging at Santa Fe Hotel in Puerto Ayora.
Day 7
North Seymour, South Plaza, Bartolomé and Santa Fe Island Excursions
From Puerto Ayora, excursions explore North Seymour Island and Las Bachas Beach, where Palo Santo trails lead past Blue-footed Booby colonies and nesting Great and Magnificent Frigatebirds. South Plaza Island and Punta Carrión offer plunge-diving boobies, Darwin's finches and Nazca Boobies among red sesuvium and Opuntia cacti. A Bartolomé and Sullivan Bay day-trip climbs to Pinnacle Rock views, with Galápagos Penguins and snorkeling. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, with lodging at Santa Fe Hotel.
Day 8
Puerto Ayora and Departure
Breakfast is included before a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station in Puerto Ayora, where conservation work and scientific research shape the archipelago's flora and fauna. The Tortoise Route reveals giant tortoises in natural habitats or breeding programs, while exhibits cover projects protecting endangered species and restoring fragile ecosystems, closing the week with the tortoises' link to Darwin's research on evolution. An escorted transfer then continues from Puerto Ayora to Baltra Airport for the flight to Quito.

A few kind words
What a wonderful Trip !
What a wonderful trip. Tristan is such a lovely person and well organised.
We had a wonderful trip around the Sierra Nevada in Colombia, up to Camarones and even Mompox. We visited so many places and met so many great people and communities.
It was FANTASTIC.
I highly recommand Remote Expeditions and Tristan for any trip you intend to plan
Authentic and well organized expedition in an indigenous tribe
Tristan guided me through the mountains of Sierra Nevada and facilitated all the details for meeting a kogi tribe.
It was a work trip as I was working on a very specific topic ( panela) and Tristan took care of all the details and was very
understanding.
The whole experience felt very authentic, and overall Tristan is so passionate
about what he does it's hard not to have a blast during the trip.
Fantastic trip off the beaten path
Tristan is a very knowledgeable guide and photographer, and he is also very personable. Traveling with him was a very nice experience and we had lots of laughs too!
The trip was flawlessly organized and Tristan understood our needs very well, tailoring the itinerary to ensure we had the best experience possible. Thanks to him, we discovered Colombia off the beaten path.
Last but not least, I have done a number of photography trips and Tristan is probably the most dedicated teacher I have traveled with. He is really passionate about passing on his knowledge and passion about photography.
I will certainly book another trip with Remote Expeditions in the near future.
