Peru Photography Tour: Nazca Lines, Colca Canyon and Machu Picchu

Overview

Fourteen days across Peru's southern circuit, built to give the Andes their due. The journey begins at sea level with a 90-minute overflight of the Nazca Lines and an afternoon sandboarding the dunes above the Huacachina oasis, then climbs through Arequipa to Colca Canyon, where condors ride the thermal currents at Cruz del Cóndor and the road crosses Patapampa Pass at 15,300 ft.

From Lake Titicaca's reed-built Uros islands and the weaving families of Taquile, the route reaches Cusco, kept deliberately gentle, before the short Inca Trail to Intipunku and a full morning inside Machu Picchu. Maras, Moray and the Sacred Valley fill the days between.

Photographic opportunities

The itinerary moves through very different light and terrain, and the photographic opportunities follow that arc. From the air over the Nazca Lines, a 90-minute flight in a 12-passenger Cessna Grand Caravan reveals figures including a hummingbird, dog, tree, whale and lizard, with the longest measuring about 1,200 ft (370 m); the desert's stable, iron-oxide-coated pebbles have preserved them well. At Huacachina, the rolling dunes offer a playful counterpoint for sandboarding. In Colca Canyon, Mirador Cruz del Cóndor looks over a canyon stretching nearly 4,000 ft below, where condors soar on thermal currents—though the morning's air decides. The road to Patapampa Pass at 15,300 ft (4,820 m) passes wild vicuñas and viscachas, with volcanoes Hualca Hualca, Sabancaya and Ampato in view. On Lake Titicaca, the reed-built Uros islands and Taquile's textile traditions reward a slower, human focus. The Sacred Valley and short Inca Trail add Inca terraces, the salt pools of Maras, and the first panoramic view of Machu Picchu from Intipunku.

Who this journey is for

This itinerary will appeal to travellers who want Peru's signature sites in a sequence that respects the altitude. It is rated Moderate: expect sandboarding at Huacachina, a challenging uphill start on the short Inca Trail to Wiñay Wayna at 2,732 m, and a half-hour descent to Intipunku. Days are long but broken by free time in Lima, a gentle first afternoon in Cusco, hot springs at Calera, and a full morning at Machu Picchu. If you prefer to acclimatise gradually, photograph condors and Inca terraces at an unhurried pace, and walk into the citadel the slow way, this itinerary fits.

A few kind words

Voyage Patagonie Mars 2025

We spent three wonderful weeks in Patagonia with Tristan. An unforgettable trip for the three of us, in a warm and relaxed atmosphere that Tristan carefully crafted down to the finest details. He organized an itinerary perfectly tailored to our requests. Always smiling, incredibly kind, and very patient. He made us experience this exceptional journey with unique moments that went beyond our expectations. Tristan is an excellent guide. He plans his trips with great professionalism on all levels, yet manages to make you forget it by sharing the experience with you, marveling at the landscapes like a friend showing you around the country… A big thank you to you. Lots of love!

Excellent Travel & Photography Guide

Tristan created a wonderful cultural experience for us over a 10 day visit to Cuba. From a photography perspective, he had researched people and locations to insure the best model, in the most cuban environment in the best light. Although we were focused on photography, he rounded out the tour with opportunities to experience the history (visit to old sugar plantation), the land (visit to a farm with oxen and a hike to waterfall), and the food (experiencing local food and drink in beautiful settings). I would highly recommend Tristan as a guide. We are already planning our next trip with him.
