Lençóis Maranhenses Photography Tour with Scenic Dune Flights
Overview
Six days among dunes that never hold still. In Lençóis Maranhenses, wind redraws the white sand overnight, and blue-green lagoons settle between the ridges. This photography journey is built around that movement: sunrise and sunset sessions over the dunes and lagoons, and two contrasting bases — the gateway town of Barreirinhas, then the village of Santo Amaro do Maranhão for the in-park days.
A panoramic scenic flight gives the full scale of the dune field, flown two guests at a time and staggered so everyone sees it from the air. The Black River offers abstract shapes and infinite patterns, and a night inside the park brings astrophotography under clear skies.
Photographic opportunities
Lençóis Maranhenses rewards patience and an eye for change. Across six days, sunrise and sunset sessions place you among white dunes and crystal-clear lagoons, where overnight wind redraws the sand and each session offers a different surface. The Black River, renowned for abstract shapes, colours, and infinite patterns, shifts your compositions toward something closer to painting than postcard. A staggered scenic-flight rotation in a small Cessna-type aircraft, two guests at a time, reveals the full scale of the dune field from the air, while those on the ground continue working the dunes and lagoons nearby. A night inside the park, in a small village away from town lights, opens astrophotography under clear skies, with the Milky Way overhead. Guidance serves beginners and advanced photographers alike, and the unhurried pace leaves room to wait for the frame.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to photographers who want to work a landscape that changes underfoot — white dunes redrawn by wind, lagoons holding the sky, and a night inside the park with the Milky Way overhead. Beginners and advanced photographers travel side by side, and the pace leaves room to wait for the frame. Days are built around sunrise and sunset sessions, with a night in an in-park village and a second chance at the stars. The physical level is easy. Two bases — Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro — anchor the ground program, and a staggered scenic-flight rotation lets every participant see the park from the air.

The journey at a glance
Following the route
The journey moves gradually through 3 distinct overnight bases.

Itinerary
Day 1
Barreirinhas Arrival and Lagoa Bonita Sunset
A private road transfer of roughly four to five hours connects São Luís with Barreirinhas, the gateway town for Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. After checking in and settling into rooms at Porto Preguiça Resort, with its riverfront setting, the group gathers for a tour orientation covering the itinerary and initial tips. Later, sunset photography at Lagoa Bonita offers a chance to capture the dunes and lagoon landscapes as daylight fades.
Day 2
Lençóis Maranhenses National Park Entry and Dune Photography
An early start leads into Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, where shifting white dunes meet blue and green lagoons. While the flight rotation runs, the ground program photographs the dunes and lagoons near Barreirinhas, learning how light moves across sand at walking pace. A panoramic scenic flight over the park, in a small Cessna-type aircraft with two passengers at a time, is optional; those staying grounded continue shooting nearby. The day closes with sunset photography at Lagoa Azul before returning to Porto Preguiça Resort in Barreirinhas.
Day 3
Scenic Flight and Journey to Santo Amaro do Maranhão
A panoramic scenic flight over Lençóis Maranhenses reveals the dune field and its blue-green lagoons from above, with participants flying two at a time in a small Cessna-type aircraft. Breakfast is included, followed by a generic lunch and later a generic dinner. The group then transfers from Barreirinhas to Santo Amaro do Maranhão, roughly two hours by road, settling into village life as the base for the in-park photography days. The Santo Amaro hotel provides a bed, breakfast table, and departure point close to the dunes.
Day 4
Dunes, Lagoons and Night Skies in Lençóis Maranhenses
First light spreads across white dunes and crystal-clear lagoons, with wind reshaping the sand overnight so every sunrise reveals a different surface. The unhurried session allows time to find compositions before the sun clears the horizon, followed by breakfast. Later, the dunes and lagoons return in afternoon and evening light, running at the group's own pace until darkness. The group then travels to a small village inside the park for astrophotography and the Milky Way, with in-park village lodging in Lençóis Maranhenses beneath the open sky.
Day 5
Dunes, Black River and Night Skies in the Park
Morning light spreads over the dunes and lagoons, and cameras come out before the return to the village for breakfast. Late morning shifts to the Black River, where dark water between dunes offers abstract shapes, colours and infinite patterns. After a local market lunch, evening brings sunset photography across dunes and lagoons, with long shadows and glassy water. When darkness settles, an additional astrophotography session makes the most of clear night skies and the Milky Way overhead.
Day 6
Sunrise at the Dunes and Lagoons, Then Transfer to São Luís
A final sunrise unfolds across the dunes and serene lagoons, offering one last session to close the journey and carry the park's essence home. The group then returns to Santo Amaro do Maranhão and begins the road back to São Luís. This return transfer is timed to reach São Luís airport by mid-afternoon, marking the conclusion of the Lençóis Maranhenses experience.

A few kind words
A genuine encounter, off the beaten track
Tristan is an exceptional guide who combines unquestionable expertise in organizing tailor-made expeditions, a great talent for photographing wildlife and sharing his passion, rare human qualities... and contagious joy! He opened up unexplored paths for us to meet the indigenous peoples of the Sierra Nevada, as part of our diplomatic reconnaissance trip to initiate a cultural exchange between these peoples and Reunion Island. Our expedition had specific goals and constraints, which Tristan managed perfectly. He is therefore a must for anyone who wants a genuine encounter with South American nature and peoples, off the beaten track.
Voyage Patagonie Mars 2025
We spent three wonderful weeks in Patagonia with Tristan. An unforgettable trip for the three of us, in a warm and relaxed atmosphere that Tristan carefully crafted down to the finest details. He organized an itinerary perfectly tailored to our requests. Always smiling, incredibly kind, and very patient. He made us experience this exceptional journey with unique moments that went beyond our expectations. Tristan is an excellent guide. He plans his trips with great professionalism on all levels, yet manages to make you forget it by sharing the experience with you, marveling at the landscapes like a friend showing you around the country… A big thank you to you. Lots of love!
Excellent Travel & Photography Guide
Tristan created a wonderful cultural experience for us over a 10 day visit to Cuba. From a photography perspective, he had researched people and locations to insure the best model, in the most cuban environment in the best light. Although we were focused on photography, he rounded out the tour with opportunities to experience the history (visit to old sugar plantation), the land (visit to a farm with oxen and a hike to waterfall), and the food (experiencing local food and drink in beautiful settings). I would highly recommend Tristan as a guide. We are already planning our next trip with him.
