Northern Peru Bird Photography Tour: Endemics of the Marañón Valley
Overview
This is a tour shaped by difficult birds and the patience they demand. From Tarapoto, the route climbs to Flor de Café, where the Scarlet-banded Barbet and Cordillera Azul Antbird hold the isolated ridge. A small plane carries you to San Lorenzo for the White-masked Antbird, found there in 2013 and tied to army-ant swarms. An Oilbird gorge and Waqanki's hummingbird garden break the search before the road rises to Abra Patricia.
At Owlet Lodge, cloud-forest trails and a night search for the Long-whiskered Owlet define the days. The Afluente roadside, San Lorenzo Hill and Huembo's Marvelous Spatuletail close the circuit, kept to eight photographers.
Photographic opportunities
This is a journey shaped by patient searching rather than certainty. At Flor de Café, afternoons and a full day are spent on the isolated ridge where the Scarlet-banded Barbet was found at an accessible site, with the Cordillera Azul Antbird also sought; foothill fruiteaters, Grey-tailed Piha, Rose-fronted Parakeet, tanagers and manakins fill the surrounding forest. Near San Lorenzo, a full day follows army-ant swarms for the White-masked Antbird, demanding stillness, low light and long lenses. The Oilbird gorge offers a short, reliable stop with birds on their roosting ledges. At Waqanki, feeders, gardens and forest edge suit hummingbirds, tanagers, butterflies and orchids, with Rufous-crested Coquette among the foothill species. Cloud-forest trails around Owlet Lodge and the Afluente roadside bring antpittas, tapaculos, trogons, quetzals and mixed undergrowth flocks, while Huembo's feeders draw the Marvelous Spatuletail. Expect full days, simple-to-rustic lodging and light that changes with altitude.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to birders and bird photographers drawn to rare endemics and recently rediscovered populations—the Scarlet-banded Barbet, White-masked Antbird, Long-whiskered Owlet and Marvelous Spatuletail among them. It suits travellers comfortable with simple-to-rustic lodging in exchange for exceptional birding, and those who enjoy patient, focused searching and full-day birding transfers. The tour is rated moderate, keeps the group to eight, and lets the birds set the pace. If you are happy to spend long days in the field where targets are never guaranteed, this circuit from Tarapoto to Abra Patricia is built for you.

Itinerary
Day 1
Lima to Tarapoto Flight and Woodland Birding
Flying from Lima to Tarapoto leads into a foothill transfer, with lunch included in the package. The afternoon is given to slow-paced birding in woodland near Tarapoto, where the rare Huallaga race of Northern Slaty Antshrike draws attention, joined by Bluish-fronted Jacamar and Sulphur-bellied Tyrant-Manakin. Dinner is included, and the night is spent at Tucan Suites Apart Hotel.
Day 2
Birding Flor de Café and the Scarlet-banded Barbet Ridge
After breakfast, travel by road from Tarapoto to Flor de Café (Plataforma). In the afternoon, bird the isolated outlying ridge where an accessible Scarlet-banded Barbet site was found, searching for the Barbet and exploring the surrounding area. Lunch and dinner are available. For those still keen after a day in the field, an optional evening walk around Flor de Café looks for the Vermiculated Screech Owl.
Day 3
Full Day at Flor de Café (Plataforma)
At Flor de Café, a full day in the Barbet area targets the Scarlet-banded Barbet and Cordillera Azul Antbird. The supporting avifauna is rich, with foothill fruiteaters, Grey-tailed Piha, Rose-fronted Parakeet, a colourful variety of tanagers and several manakins. Breakfast is included in the package, while a generic lunch and dinner are available at additional cost. The Plataforma route offers a focused birding experience around these key species.
Day 4
Flor de Café Birding and Return to Tarapoto
Early morning birding around Flor de Café makes the most of the ridge before staff load gear for departure. Breakfast is included before the road transfer from Flor de Café (Plataforma) back to Tarapoto, with birding stops along the way. A generic lunch and dinner are available, and the night is spent at Tucan Suites Apart Hotel.
Day 5
Birding the Cordillera Escalera en route to Yurimaguas
A full-day birding transfer connects Tarapoto with Yurimaguas, passing through Cordillera Escalera. Foothill forest, roadside edges and selected birding spots are worked for hummingbirds, tanagers, manakins and Koepcke's Hermit. The warm, active outing offers a useful contrast to the higher Alto Mayo sites. Breakfast is included in the package, while lunch and dinner are listed separately. The journey then continues toward Yurimaguas.
Day 6
Small-Plane Flight to San Lorenzo and White-masked Antbird Birding
A small-plane flight carries you from Yurimaguas to San Lorenzo on the Marañón River, followed by local transport to the White-masked Antbird forest patch. Most of the time is devoted to birding this exceptionally diverse forest near San Lorenzo, where the White-masked Antbird population was found in 2013. Once requiring a dedicated expedition with uncertain results along the Morona River, the species is now readily available here. Breakfast is included, with lunch and dinner available at additional cost.
Day 7
White-masked Antbird Search at San Lorenzo
A full day at San Lorenzo is dedicated to finding the White-masked Antbird, an obligate army-ant follower typically located by tracking a working swarm and waiting for the bird to appear. If the swarms remain quiet, playback may be used as a backup. Breakfast is included, while lunch and dinner are available at additional cost.
Day 8
Return Flight, Oilbird Gorge and Waqanki Lodge
After an included breakfast, a small-plane flight returns from San Lorenzo to Yurimaguas, followed by a road-birding transfer toward Moyobamba. Along the route, pause at the Oilbird gorge, where these birds rest visibly on their roosting ledges, a brief and dependable roadside stop. The journey continues to Waqanki Lodge, a sanctuary in the San Martín Region near Moyobamba, known for hummingbird sightings and orchid gardens within a lush tropical setting. Lunch and dinner round out the day before settling in at the lodge.
Day 9
Owls, Valley Birds and Hummingbird Gardens at Wankanki Lodge
A pre-dawn owling and nightjar walk around the Wankanki Lodge grounds offers the chance to look for Rufous, Blackish and Spot-winged Nightjars alongside Black-banded and Tropical Screech Owls. Morning birding in the lodge valley turns up the endemic Mishana Tyrannulet, Lesser Elaenia, Stripe-necked Tody-Tyrant, Pale-breasted Spinetail and the newly described Varzea Thrush. Later, the Waqanki Garden hummingbird session works the feeders, gardens and forest edge for hummingbirds, tanagers, butterflies and orchids, with Rufous-crested Coquette among the foothill species. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.
Day 10
Birding Drive to Abra Patricia and Owlet Lodge
A birding drive from Wankanki Lodge climbs toward Abra Patricia, with a first stop that may reveal Point-tailed Palmcreeper along with possible Pale-eyed Blackbird, Black-billed Seed-Finch and Cinereous-breasted Spinetail. The route continues through lower elevations before reaching Owlet Lodge. Breakfast is included, while lunch and dinner are available at additional cost.
Day 11
Cloud Forest Trails at Owlet Lodge and a Long-whiskered Owlet Search
A full day exploring the extensive cloud-forest trail system around Owlet Lodge, targeting the localized endemic Ochre-fronted Antpitta alongside Rusty-tinged, Chestnut and Rufous-breasted Antpitta, plus tapaculos, trogons, quetzals, manakins and fruiteaters. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the package. After dark, a guided night search on the forested trail outside El Progreso offers improved odds of the near-mythical Long-whiskered Owlet, with Johnson's Tody-Flycatcher also possible at the same site. Overnight at Owlet Lodge.
Day 12
Afluente Roadside Forest Birding
Breakfast is included before heading to the Afluente Roadside Forest below Abra Patricia, where birding follows the road through upper lowland tropical forest near the small settlement of Afluente. The tiny Speckle-chested Piculet and canopy-dwelling Ash-throated Antwren are the standout specialties, with strong chances of Andean Cock-of-the-Rock crossing the road and the Ecuadorian Piedtail. A generic lunch and dinner are available, followed by a stay at Owlet Lodge.
Day 13
San Lorenzo Hill Trail and Huembo Reserve
A morning ascent of the San Lorenzo Hill Trail near Abra Patricia targets Pale-billed and Rusty-tinged Antpittas plus Russet-mantled Softtail, with cloud-forest patches offering Gray-breasted Mountain-toucan, Golden-headed Quetzal, Inca Flycatcher, Chestnut-crested Cotinga and more. An afternoon at the hummingbird feeders opposite Huembo Hummingbird Center centers on the Marvelous Spatuletail, joined by Sparkling Violetear, Chestnut-breasted Coronet and Little Woodstar. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided, with Owlet Lodge as the base.
Day 14
Cloud Forest Birding at Owlet Lodge
Birding at Owlet Lodge unfolds across cloud forest between 1000 and 2200 metres, spanning several altitudinal zones. A full day in the field focuses on targets such as Cinnamon-breasted Tody-Tyrant, the endemic Bar-winged Wood-wren, Royal Sunangel and Equatorial Graytail, with possible endemic antpittas including Ochre-fronted and Rusty-tinged. Breakfast is included in the package, while a generic lunch and generic dinner are available. The day is based at Owlet Lodge, surrounded by the forest and its changing elevations.
Day 15
Abra Patricia to Tarapoto Airport Transfer
A final included breakfast precedes the morning transport from Abra Patricia down to Tarapoto Airport, with a flexible, flight-dependent window for optional birding en route to Tarapoto or near the town. This opportunistic birding is fitted around departure logistics before drop-off for afternoon or evening flights to Lima and onward homeward connections, closing out the journey through northern Peru.
