Northern Peru Hummingbird Photography Tour: Alto Mayo Endemics
Overview
This nine-day northern Peru journey is built around hummingbirds and endemic species, moving at an unhurried pace through the foothills and montane forests of San Martín. We begin in Tarapoto, spending a full day in the Cordillera Escalera for hummingbirds, tanagers, manakins, and Koepcke’s Hermit. From Moyobamba and Waqanki Lodge, garden feeders and forest-edge trails offer comfortable hummingbird photography, with Rufous-crested Coquette, orchids, and butterflies close at hand.
The route climbs to Owlet Lodge for humid montane forest, antpittas, and a night search for Long-whiskered Owlet. At Huembo, the Marvelous Spatuletail receives patient attention. Easy walking, short distances, and a maximum of eight participants keep the focus on light and behavior.
Photographic opportunities
Northern Peru rewards a patient, adaptable approach. In the warm foothill forest of Cordillera Escalera, hummingbirds, tanagers and manakins move through roadside edges and selected birding spots, with Koepcke's Hermit among the possibilities. At Waqanki, garden feeders and forest-edge trails allow comfortable hummingbird photography, with Rufous-crested Coquette and other foothill species, plus orchids and butterflies, offering close, controlled subjects. Higher at Owlet Lodge, the work shifts to humid montane forest: antpittas, wood-quail and understory birds demand slow movement, quiet listening and short waits, while after dark the trail outside El Progreso is used to listen for Long-whiskered Owlet. At Huembo, feeders across from the Hummingbird Center give time with Marvelous Spatuletail, Sparkling Violetear, Chestnut-breasted Coronet and Little Woodstar on the flowers. Morning sessions offer softer light, and the easy pace keeps attention on clean perches, natural behaviour and the birds' own rhythm.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to photographers who want to work northern Peru's hummingbirds and endemic birds at an unhurried pace. The physical level is easy, with short distances, feeder sessions, and slow forest walks. Maximum of eight participants. Days move between Tarapoto, Moyobamba, Waqanki, Owlet Lodge, and Huembo, balancing garden feeders with humid montane forest trails where antpittas and understory birds require listening and patience. Evenings may include a guided night search for Long-whiskered Owlet. It suits those who value calm concentration and comfortable, immersive bird photography over a demanding schedule.

Itinerary
Day 1
Tarapoto Arrival and Foothill Transfer
A flight from Lima carries you to Tarapoto, gateway to Peru's high jungle foothills, with a separate transfer arranged for the onward journey. A second transfer then brings you to the Tucan Suites Apart Hotel, where you settle in after the travel. The day closes with a generic dinner, listed at 35 USD, kept flexible rather than fixed to a particular venue. This arrival service block strings together the Lima to Tarapoto flight, the foothill transfer, the hotel transfer, and an evening meal, leaving timing, vehicle, luggage and safety details to be confirmed independently.
Day 2
Birding the Cordillera Escalera Foothills
Starting from Tarapoto, the day heads into Cordillera Escalera to bird foothill forest, roadside edges, and selected spots, looking for hummingbirds, tanagers, manakins, and Koepcke's Hermit. This warm, active outing offers a useful contrast to the higher Alto Mayo sites. Breakfast is included in the package, while lunch and dinner are listed separately. A return transfer brings the route back to Tarapoto, with accommodation at Tucan Suites Apart Hotel.
Day 3
Tarapoto to Moyobamba via Waqanki Garden
After included breakfast, a transfer carries you from Tarapoto to Moyobamba. At Waqanki Garden, a hummingbird session works the feeders, gardens, and forest edge, targeting hummingbirds, tanagers, butterflies, and orchids, with Rufous-crested Coquette among the possible foothill species. The productive, comfortable photography block sits within Waqanki Lodge, a sanctuary in the San Martín Region known for hummingbird sightings and orchid gardens, before dinner and the night in Moyobamba.
Day 4
Moyobamba: Waqanki Gardens and Forest-Edge Trails
Starting from Moyobamba, the day centers on Waqanki, a sanctuary in the San Martín Region known for hummingbird activity and orchid gardens. A Waqanki Garden Hummingbird Session works the feeders, gardens, and nearby forest edge, with Rufous-crested Coquette among the foothill species possible. After lunch, Waqanki Lodge Afternoon Trails follow garden and forest-edge paths at an open pace, focusing on birds away from the prepared perches. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included, with the night spent at Waqanki Lodge in Cajamarca.
Day 5
Moyobamba to Owlet Lodge via Huembo and El Progreso
A morning breakfast precedes the transfer from Moyobamba to Owlet Lodge. In the afternoon, hummingbird feeders across from Huembo Hummingbird Center host the Marvelous Spatuletail, alongside Sparkling Violetear, Chestnut-breasted Coronet and Little Woodstar. Dinner follows before a guided night search on the forested trail outside El Progreso, where local knowledge aids chances of the near-mythical Long-whiskered Owlet, with Johnson's Tody-Flycatcher also possible. The night is spent at Owlet Lodge.
Day 6
Owlet Lodge and the Alto Mayo Forest
At Owlet Lodge, breakfast starts a day focused on the humid montane forest of Alto Mayo. Trails and private reserve areas are used to look for antpittas, wood-quail and understory birds, with listening, short waits and careful movement. A guided night search along the forested trail outside El Progreso draws on local knowledge for the near-mythical Long-whiskered Owlet, and the same site suits Johnson's Tody-Flycatcher. Lunch and dinner are available, and the lodge serves as the base.
Day 7
Owlet Lodge to Huembo: Marvelous Spatuletail Hummingbird Session
After breakfast, transfer from Owlet Lodge to Huembo, keeping the journey and its logistics separate from the day's main activity. The afternoon is spent at the hummingbird feeders opposite Huembo Hummingbird Center, where the Marvelous Spatuletail has been the regular headline visitor. Sparkling Violetear, Chestnut-breasted Coronet and Little Woodstar also appear among the flowers. Dinner follows, with the night at Huembo Lodge.
Day 8
Huembo and Pomacochas
Breakfast comes with the package before a morning at Huembo, using softer light to work the hummingbird feeders and, conditions permitting, seek Pale-billed Antpitta nearby. The afternoon returns to the hummingbird feeders opposite Huembo Hummingbird Center, where the Marvelous Spatuletail is the regular headline visitor alongside Sparkling Violetear, Chestnut-breasted Coronet and Little Woodstar. Lunch and dinner are generic, priced separately. This final northern Peru block closes before the return to Tarapoto, with Huembo Lodge as the base.
Day 9
Huembo Morning Birding Before Tarapoto Transfer
A final morning at Huembo brings softer light for hummingbird watching at the feeders, with a possible nearby search for Pale-billed Antpitta if conditions and local access permit. Breakfast is included in the package. This northern Peru birding stop closes out the Huembo portion before the transfer to Tarapoto, which is handled as its own service block so vehicle, timing, luggage and safety details can be confirmed separately.
