Colombia Kogui Village Photography Tour with Hammock Nights
Overview
This four-day, three-night photography tour in Colombia is built around a Kogui village immersion, with a small group of no more than eight travellers. The route runs from Santa Marta to Palmor Village and Uranio Alto, then on foot to Sentay and Gungulaja, where nights are spent in a hut in hammocks. In Gungulaja you visit the village and its surroundings, meet the Mamo, the spiritual leader, and take a bath in the river. An ecological walk follows the stream past the old village site, traditional plantations and wax palms, with time to observe daily Kogui life, exchange with residents and learn how fique is prepared.
Why I created this expedition
The photographic narrative here is slow and cumulative rather than checklist-driven. It begins with transfers from Santa Marta to Palmor Village and Uranio Alto, a transitional day that sets the tone for a route measured in footsteps and village time. On day two the hike from Uranio Alto to Sentay delivers you into Gungulaja, where the story turns inward: a visit to the village and its surroundings, a meeting with the Mamo, the spiritual leader, and a bath in the river before returning.
Day three is the heart of the immersion. An ecological walk follows the stream of the river, passing the site of the old village of Gungulaja, traditional plantations and wax palms. Back in the village, you observe daily Kogui life and exchange with residents, then learn how fique, the natural fiber used for mochilas, is prepared. Local lunch is followed by a quiet break during the hot hours, and the evening offers a sky free of any light pollution before dinner and a second night in the hut.
The journey closes with the hike from Sentay back to Uranio Alto and transfers to Palmor Village and Santa Marta. Throughout, the pace is unhurried, letting the route and village time shape what you photograph.
Photographic opportunities
Light and subject matter shift with the terrain. The walk along the stream of the river opens up the old village site of Gungulaja, traditional plantations and wax palms, a layered landscape where vegetation, water and cultivated ground sit close together. In the village itself, the emphasis is on daily Kogui life and exchanges with residents, alongside the preparation of fique, the natural fiber used for mochilas, a process that rewards close, patient observation. The meeting with the Mamo, the spiritual leader, and the river bath are part of the village rhythm rather than staged events. The quiet break during the hot hours keeps the middle of the day open, and the clear, light-pollution-free night sky above the hut offers a distinct change of register.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to travellers who want to meet the Mamo, the spiritual leader of Gungulaja, and learn about Kogui village life. It will also suit travellers comfortable sleeping in a hammock in a hut for consecutive nights, and those happy to hike in the jungle on consecutive days. The physical level is moderate, and the group is deliberately small, with no more than eight travellers. The pace is unhurried, with a quiet break built into the hot hours, so the route and village time shape the experience rather than a fixed schedule. Meals and nights are shared in the village, and the journey closes with a hike from Sentay back to Uranio Alto before transfers onward.

Itinerary
Day 1
Santa Marta to the Sierra Nevada
The route climbs out of Santa Marta into the foothills and middle slopes of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, passing through small mountain settlements before reaching the remote area where the journey continues. This is a day of transfer and transition, with the landscape shifting from coastal lowlands to the ridges and valleys that define the range. The Sierra Nevada is known for its exceptional endemism, and birders associate these elevations with species such as the Santa Marta Warbler, Santa Marta Brushfinch and Santa Marta Antbird. A midday stop for lunch breaks the drive.
Day 2
Into Kogui Territory
The journey continues on foot across the forested slopes of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, through a landscape of steep ridges and river valleys. Reaching our host Kogui community, the day turns toward the village and its surroundings: time to discover the settlement, meet the Mamo, the community's spiritual leader, and bathe in the river before returning. Wildlife is not the focus here; the day belongs to the terrain, the water and the people who call these mountains home.
Day 3
Kogui Village Immersion
An ecological walk follows the river past the site of an old village, where traditional plantations and wax palms stand along the route. Back in the community, time is spent learning about Kogui life and exchanging with residents, followed by a local lunch and a quiet pause through the hot hours. In the afternoon comes the preparation of fique, the natural fiber traditionally used to make mochilas. After darkness falls, the night sky—far from urban light pollution—becomes a photographic subject in itself before a second night in the village hut.
Day 4
Across the Sierra Nevada to Santa Marta
The final hike retraces the mountain trails toward the road, as the Sierra Nevada foothills gradually open into broader slopes and ridgelines. The route offers photographers shifting light across the terrain and opportunities to observe birds and wildlife characteristic of these habitats. From the mountains, the journey continues by vehicle toward Santa Marta, descending through small settlements and increasingly green lowlands. The day balances walking with time on the road, leaving space to photograph the landscape and whatever crosses our path.

A few kind words
A magical tour of undiscovered Colombia
I cannot believe how fortunate I am, to have discovered Remote Expeditions, with Tristan as a tour guide, and photographer extraordinaire, sharing his view of Colombia with us, through the lens.
Tristan is an incredible guide. Safe, organized, thoughtful and experienced. He truly chose the best that this mostly remote tour of Colombia has to offer. He has built strong relationships with people in remote villages and has sourced ways to shine a light on their cultural specialities. Dancing, singing, food all combined to allow for great photo opportunities.
In the land of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, you can feel the energy, experience the culture and bring home amazing photographs that capture the moments.
If Colombia is on your photographic bucket list, Tristan is your guide. I recommend him and his beautifully curated tour, without hesitation.
Our Second Unforgettable Trip with Tristan
Our second tailor-made trip with my husband and our friend Tristan, who always knows how to make the trip enjoyable with his simple approach and his own special touch that adds that little extra something!
Tristan is very calm, cheerful, and always understanding of our expectations!
Our first trip to Patagonia was exceptional, and now in September we're going on a trip to Madeira, which will be completely different but also very enjoyable.
Thank you, Tristan.
Good things come in threes 😉
