Colombia: A Photographer’s Passage Between Coast and Cloud

This photography journey crosses northern Colombia from the forested foothills of the Sierra Nevada to the Caribbean coast, Mompox and Cartagena. The itinerary combines field practice with carefully arranged encounters: a Wiwa family near Minca, a Kogi village, Arhuaco companions at Taironaka, a Wayuu cultural presentation, fishermen in Nueva Venecia, Cumbia musicians and Palenqueras. Days are shaped around portraiture, wildlife, long exposures, street photography and the available light. Tristan Quevilly accompanies the journey, while local guides add cultural and natural-history context. The result is an 11-day visual narrative of communities, landscapes and traditions beyond Colombia’s usual visitor routes.

The story begins in Minca, where a short theory session establishes the photographic foundations for the days ahead. A nearby coffee farm provides the first field practice before an afternoon visit with a Wiwa family in their four-hut village. At Marinka, the subject changes again: waterfalls for long-exposure work, birdlife with a specialist guide and environmental portraits in a forest setting.

From the Sierra Nevada, the route moves towards the coast and a succession of distinct cultural landscapes. In Kogi territory, the programme follows activities such as coca-leaf collection, fiqué-fibre preparation and mochila weaving. Taironaka brings Arhuaco portraits into an archaeological and riverside setting, while Camarones combines a Wayuu cultural presentation with the nearby flamingo sanctuary. Nueva Venecia then shifts the viewpoint to the water, with mangroves, seabirds, fishermen and houses reached by canoe.

Mompox and Cartagena form the final chapter. Costumed Cumbia musicians, historic homes, workshops and the Magdalena River offer a measured approach to portraiture and place in Mompox. Cartagena changes the rhythm: early colonial streets, Palenqueras, architectural details and the colour of Getsemaní. Together, these locations create a varied photographic account of Colombia’s Caribbean region, built from documented encounters rather than a simple sequence of sightseeing stops.

In Minca, a specialist-guided birdwatching session may reveal Caribbean toucans and tangaras, while Marinka’s waterfalls provide time to practise long exposures. The Sierra Nevada programme also includes environmental portrait sessions with Wiwa, Kogi and Arhuaco participants. Near Camarones, flamingos are photographed at sunrise with the Sierra Nevada peaks behind them, with a possible sighting of the Vermilion Cardinal.

On the Ciénaga Grande, boats and canoes provide viewpoints over mangroves, seabird colonies, Nueva Venecia and fishermen at work. Mompox combines arranged portraits with Cumbia musicians, colonial architecture, craft workshops and sunset landscapes from the Magdalena River. Cartagena adds early-morning Palenquera portraits, street scenes, architectural details, murals and the graphic colour of Getsemaní. The itinerary therefore moves deliberately between wildlife, people, landscape, long exposure and travel reportage.

This itinerary will appeal to photographers who enjoy working slowly in the field and moving between portraiture, wildlife, landscape and street photography. The programme includes a 6am birdwatching session, 4×4 transfers on rough mountain roads, boat journeys, long-exposure practice and time with Wiwa, Kogi, Arhuaco and Wayuu hosts. Its stated physical level is moderate.
