Costa Rica Small-Group Birding Photography Tour, Osa to Savegre
Overview
This 16-day Costa Rica photography and birding circuit is built for small groups of two to four travellers who want varied habitats, patient field time and a realistic chance to build a long species list. The route moves through Pacific dry forest and Carara, the Osa Peninsula, the Talamanca highlands, the Caribbean lowlands, Arenal, Monteverde and La Ensenada.
Expect roadside birding, national-park trails, lodge gardens, private reserves and hummingbird feeders, from Carara's Laguna Meandrica and Headquarters trails to Danta Corcovado's forest, the Savegre highlands and La Selva at dawn. Sightings remain dependent on habitat, season, weather and access.
Photographic opportunities
Over sixteen days the route moves through markedly different light and habitat, from Pacific dry forest and transitional woodland at Carara to the primary forest of the Osa Peninsula, the Talamanca highlands, Caribbean lowlands, Arenal, Monteverde and the dry-lowland mosaic at La Ensenada. Mornings reward early starts: flat trails such as Laguna Meandrica, the Headquarters boardwalk, Danta Corcovado's forest property and La Selva's entrance road and interior trails suit long lenses and patient fieldcraft, with manakin displays, antbird and antshrike activity, woodcreepers and understory skulkers calling for careful focus and quiet positioning. Hummingbird feeders at Cerro Lodge, Danta Corcovado, San Gerardo de Dota, Paraiso Quetzal, El Tapir and Monteverde allow controlled high-speed work on iridescent plumage, while flowering hedges and gardens offer closer, slower compositions. The Paraiso Quetzal local-finca program and the Savegre highland trails are the quetzal settings, and the Scaled Antpitta hide at Hotel Quelitales gives a rare chance to photograph an elusive forest-floor bird. Roadside stops, the Rincon River bridge, the Puerto Viejo Great Green Macaw site and optional mangrove boat trips add varied field situations; sightings remain dependent on habitat, season, weather and access.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to birders who want a broad Costa Rica circuit rather than a single-habitat stay, moving from Pacific dry forest and Carara through the Osa Peninsula, the Talamanca highlands, Caribbean lowlands, Arenal, Monteverde and La Ensenada.
It is designed for small groups of two to four travellers comfortable with early starts, varied terrain and long transfer days that include birding stops. The pace is moderate, mixing roadside birding, national-park trails, lodge gardens, private reserves and hummingbird feeders. Sightings depend on habitat, season, weather, access and field conditions, so patience and flexible field time matter more than chasing guarantees.

Itinerary
Day 1
Alajuela Arrival and Hotel Aeropuerto Transfer
A short transfer from the airport area in Alajuela brings you to Hotel Aeropuerto, roughly five minutes from the terminal. This convenient airport hotel serves as the stop for arrival and the final night before international departure. Settle in, then enjoy a generic dinner, listed at 35 USD, to close out the day.
Day 2
Ceibo-Cascajal Road and Cerro Lodge Birding
Leaving Alajuela, the route passes the Ceibo-Cascajal Road, a Pacific lowland dry-forest site visited by few Costa Rica birding tours, where forest, scrub and open fields may yield Black-headed Trogon, Turquoise-browed Motmot, Long-tailed Manakin, Nutting's Flycatcher, Crested Bobwhite, Striped Cuckoo, Lesser Ground-Cuckoo, Painted Bunting, Double-striped Thick-knee and Red-breasted Meadowlark. An optional Caldera mangrove search may suit Rufous-necked Wood-Rail and Mangrove Hummingbird, with a roadside pause for White-throated Magpie-Jay. At Cerro Lodge, gardens, feeders, veranda and observation tower offer hummingbirds, dry-forest species and possible Scarlet Macaws, plus an optional Tarcoles River boat trip and access-road owling.
Day 3
Carara National Park Trails from Cerro Lodge
From Cerro Lodge, a short transfer reaches Carara National Park for the flat Laguna Meandrica Trail, following the Tarcoles River through secondary forest rich in species such as White-whiskered Puffbird, Baird's Trogon and Orange-collared Manakin. Ponds at the trail's end may hold roosting Boat-billed Herons. Later, the Headquarters Trail crosses primary rainforest by asphalt and boardwalk, where Gray-chested Dove, Streak-chested Antpitta and Riverside Wren appear. Return to Cerro Lodge, with its gardens, feeders and observation tower, for Pacific lowland birding.
Day 4
Coastal Birding Transfer to the Osa Peninsula
After breakfast, travel south along the coast from Cerro Lodge toward the Osa Peninsula, passing Manuel Antonio, Quepos, Dominical and Rincon with birding pauses. Manuel Antonio National Park is passed without stopping; short stops may reveal Bare-throated Tiger-Heron, Brown Booby, Northern Jacana, wintering shorebirds, gulls and terns, while Quepos is a search area for Spot-fronted Swift. At the Rincon River bridge, look for Yellow-billed Cotinga, with the Yellow-billed Cotinga Reserve near Danta Corcovado as an alternative. Arrive at Danta Corcovado Lodge, five kilometres from La Palma, and bird its grounds near Corcovado National Park.
Day 5
Forest Trails and Hummingbird Feeders at Danta Corcovado Lodge
Breakfast at Danta Corcovado Lodge precedes a morning on its 30-hectare primary and secondary forest trails, where Rufous-winged Woodpecker, Black-hooded Antshrike, Chiriqui Foliage-gleaner, Turquoise Cotinga, Isthmian Wren, Spot-crowned Euphonia and Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager may be found, alongside Orange-collared, Velvety and Red-capped Manakins. A midday session at the Danta Lodge hummingbird feeders offers Band-tailed Barbthroat, Stripe-throated Hermit, Purple-crowned Fairy, White-crested Coquette, Long-billed Starthroat, Garden Emerald, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Mangrove Hummingbird and Blue-throated Goldentail. Lunch and dinner round out the time at this Osa Peninsula base near Corcovado National Park.
Day 6
La Gamba Road Birding to Wilson Botanical Gardens
After an included breakfast, travel from Danta Corcovado toward Golfito Bay, then bird the lower La Gamba Road where grassland gives way to primary rainforest. Watch for Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Red-breasted Meadowlark, seedeaters, Charming Hummingbird, Golden-naped Woodpecker, Spot-crowned Euphonia and Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager; the Esquinas Lodge and Tropenstation area may add White-crested Coquette and Veraguan Mango. Continue to San Vito for lunch and hotel check-in, then visit Wilson Botanical Gardens, a reliable setting for Turquoise Cotinga, plus Gray-necked Wood-Rail, Red-headed Barbet, Fiery-billed Aracari and feeder hummingbirds. Dinner precedes an overnight San Vito hotel stay.
Day 7
Highland Crossing to San Gerardo de Dota
A long transfer from San Vito climbs through San Isidro de El General into the Talamanca Mountains. The San Joaquin Wetlands offer a chance to look for Chiriqui Yellowthroat before the ascent. At La Georgina, feeders around 10,000 feet draw Fiery-throated and Volcano Hummingbirds, plus Ruddy-capped Nightingale-Thrush, Sooty Finch, Elegant Euphonia, and Large-footed Finch. Birding along the Cerro de la Muerte antenna road targets Timberline Wren, Peg-billed Finch, Sooty-capped Chlorospingus, and Volcano Junco. Arriving at San Gerardo de Dota, valley lodge hummingbird feeders may host Lesser Violetear, Green-crowned Brilliant, Talamanca Hummingbird, and more. Savegre Mountain Hotel serves as the highland base.
Day 8
Quetzal Highlands and Savegre Valley Birding
An early start heads to Paraiso Quetzal for its local-finca program, offering good chances to see Resplendent Quetzals in highland habitat before returning to the lodge for breakfast and hummingbird feeder viewing. Birding continues in Savegre Private Reserve, covering mountain and river-corridor habitats above the lodge and along the valley. After lunch, drive high behind Savegre Mountain Hotel for the Savegre Highland Downhill Trail, where Resplendent Quetzal is possible but not reliable, alongside Spotted Wood-Quail, Barred Parakeet, Black-faced Solitaire, Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher and more. Dinner follows, with Savegre Mountain Hotel as the preferred base.
Day 9
Birding Reserva el Copal and the Savegre Valley Foothills
A morning transfer carries you from San Gerardo de Dota through the Savegre valley to Reserva el Copal, a community-run reserve set between Turrialba and Tapanti. Much of the day is spent birding its forested foothill habitat, where flowering bushes and Heliconias draw a wide hummingbird range, Green Thorntail among the most frequent. Tanagers are a highlight, from Flame-colored and White-winged to Spangle-cheeked and Silver-throated. A late transfer continues to Hotel Quelitales near Quelitales, the base for a cloud-forest session with a hide where Scaled Antpitta is described as reliable.
Day 10
Cloud-Forest Birding at Hotel Quelitales and El Tapir
Breakfast precedes birding the cloud-forest grounds of Hotel Quelitales, where the Scaled Antpitta hide offers a chance at this elusive species alongside Red-headed Barbet and Ochre-breasted Antpitta. A transfer toward Puerto Viejo passes El Tapir Nature Reserve, stopping at flowering beds reliable for Snowcap and other hummingbirds, with possible Black-crested Coquette. Further roadside birding targets Canebrake Wren and Gray-crowned Yellowthroat. Near Puerto Viejo, a midday visit seeks endangered Great Green Macaws, followed by an optional Selva Verde lunch and river check for Sunbittern. Overnight at Hotel Ara Ambigua in Sarapiqui.
Day 11
Dawn Birding at La Selva and Arenal Transfer
After breakfast, an early departure reaches La Selva Biological Station, birding the entrance road before the reserve itself. Over 400 recorded species make the visitor-center clearing and forest trails productive, with chances for Great Tinamou, Semiplumbeous Hawk, antbirds, woodpeckers, manakins, tanagers and Snowy Cotinga. Lunch precedes the northbound transfer to Arenal Observatory Lodge, the Arenal base for private-reserve trails and garden birding, including Black-crested Coquette and Green Thorntail near flowering hedges. Dinner closes the day; room plan and availability remain to be confirmed.
Day 12
Arenal Observatory Lodge Reserve Trails and Hedge Birding
Breakfast at Arenal Observatory Lodge precedes a day spent along private forest-reserve trails and the surrounding lodge hedges. One trail is noted for Wrenthrush, while other prospects include Great Curassow, Smoky-brown Woodpecker, White-fronted Parrot, Russet Antshrike, Spotted Antbird, Bare-necked Umbrellabird, Black-and-yellow Tanager and Yellow-crowned Euphonia. Flowering hedges may add Black-crested Coquette and Green Thorntail. Lunch and dinner are listed separately. The lodge serves as the Arenal base for these forest searches, with room plan and availability still to be confirmed.
Day 13
Fortuna Rail Stakeout, Bogarin Trail and Selvatura Bridges
Breakfast precedes a guided stakeout at a private reserve near Fortuna, targeting White-throated Crake, Uniform Crake and Gray-cowled Wood-Rail, followed by Bogarin Trail for Keel-billed Motmot, Olivaceous Piculet, Black-cheeked and Rufous-winged Woodpeckers, Plain Xenops and White-collared Manakin. After lunch, transfer roughly three hours from Arenal to Monteverde, then walk Selvatura's montane forest and suspension bridges, where Three-wattled Bellbird is the main goal alongside Black Guan, Buff-fronted Quail-Dove, Resplendent Quetzal, Collared Trogon, Black-banded Woodcreeper and White-eared Ground-Sparrow. Dinner and overnight at Cala Lodge.
Day 14
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and Transfer to La Ensenada
Start with breakfast before heading to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, arriving early to watch hummingbirds at the entrance feeders and then walking the broad and steeper trails. Possible sightings include Buff-fronted Quail-Dove, Collared Trogon, Red-headed Barbet, Prong-billed Barbet, Blue-throated Toucanet, Costa Rican Warbler, Sooty-faced Finch and Golden-browed Chlorophonia. After lunch, transfer roughly three hours from Monteverde to La Ensenada, with lower-elevation stops if useful, then dinner and an overnight stay at La Ensenada Sanctuary Lodge before returning to Alajuela.
Day 15
La Ensenada Dry-Lowland Birding and Transfer to Alajuela
Breakfast is included before focusing on La Ensenada's dry scrub, dry forest, pasture and mangrove mosaic, where targets include Crested Bobwhite, Double-striped Thick-knee, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Plain-capped Starthroat, Steely-vented Hummingbird, White-throated Magpie-Jay, Banded Wren, White-lored Gnatcatcher, Stripe-headed Sparrow, Streak-backed Oriole and Spot-breasted Oriole. An optional La Ensenada Mangrove Boat Trip, if arranged, seeks Mangrove Cuckoo, Mangrove Hummingbird, Panama Flycatcher and common wetland birds. Lunch and dinner are available at extra cost. Afterwards, an approximately three-hour transfer reaches Alajuela and Hotel Aeropuerto, an airport hotel about five minutes from the terminal.
Day 16
Departure from Hotel Aeropuerto with Breakfast
A final included breakfast at Hotel Aeropuerto eases the morning before the transfer to the international airport for departure. The hotel typically reimburses one taxi direction, covering the ride as you leave for your flight. This closing movement keeps the route simple, moving from the hotel to international departures without extra stops or added activities. It is a straightforward conclusion to the stay, focused on a relaxed meal and the journey onward.

A few kind words
He estado revisando poco a poco todas mis fotos del tour Viva Colombia.
