Bolivia Photography Tour: La Paz, Lake Titicaca and Uyuni Salt Flats
Overview
This eight-day Bolivian highlands journey moves between two photographic worlds: the walking city of La Paz and the immense, open altiplano beyond. Begin with a cable car climb to El Alto, then a downhill urban trek through hanging neighborhoods and the Witch’s Market. At Lake Titicaca, a slow Copacabana stroll leads to the southern Isla del Sol and its Inca Stairs.
From La Paz, fly to Uyuni and continue by 4×4 across the Salar de Uyuni to Incahuasi Island and sunset on the salt. The route then threads the Siloli Desert and Eduardo Avaroa Reserve—volcanoes, colored lagoons, the Stone Tree, and Laguna Colorada—before returning past the Green Lagoon.
Photographic opportunities
This journey moves between two very different kinds of light. In La Paz, the Mi Teleférico ride to El Alto and the four-hour downhill walk through the hanging neighborhoods and market quarter offer street-level subjects: vendors, narrow lanes, and the Witch's Market, with the Andes as a constant backdrop. On Lake Titicaca, the southern Isla del Sol trek to the Inca Stairs and Fountain of Youth opens wide views over the water, and the Copacabana shoreline rewards a slow half hour. The altiplano days shift to scale. The train cemetery's rusting locomotives, Colchani's salt-harvesting work, and the Salar de Uyuni itself — cracked hexagons in the dry season, a mirror in the wet — give room for optical-illusion and horizon work. Incahuasi Island's enormous cacti and the sunset out on the salt are deliberate, unhurried stops. In the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve, volcanoes, colored lagoons, the Stone Tree, and Laguna Colorada follow one another, with Andean wildlife such as pink flamingos and llamas along the way. Long 4×4 drives keep the windows busy past the Siloli, Dali, and Green Lagoon terrain.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to photographers drawn to high-altitude light, wide horizons, and the slow, changing texture of the altiplano. The active sections are unhurried—a downhill urban walk through La Paz, a short Isla del Sol trek, and easy town time—while the long open-country stretches are covered by 4×4. Altitude and full days ask for common sense rather than fitness. With a maximum of eight travelers, the experience stays personal and adaptable. Photographers interested in markets, salt-flat scale, colored lagoons, and Andean wildlife will find the route well suited to patient, observant travel.

The journey moves gradually through 6 distinct overnight bases.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in La Paz: Coca Tea and a Gentle Start
A transfer from El Alto Airport brings you into La Paz, where a welcome orientation unfolds over coca tea, the traditional Andean way to ease into altitude. Your representative outlines the days ahead, answers questions and shares practical tips about Bolivia in a relaxed conversation rather than a formal briefing. The evening stays free on purpose, since resting well on the first night at this altitude matters. Overnight is planned at a hotel in La Paz or Copacabana, to be confirmed.
Day 2
Mi Teleférico, El Alto Descent and La Paz Markets
Ride Mi Teleférico from La Paz up to El Alto, one of the world's highest cities, taking in the Andes and the scale of the twin-city metropolis. A roughly four-hour downhill urban trek then leads through the Hanging Neighborhoods, streets, plazas and alleyways back into La Paz. After the descent, a local micro bus carries you to the market quarter, where several markets are explored, with the Witch's Market as the highlight, mixing Andean ritual items with everyday commerce.
Day 3
La Paz to Copacabana and Isla del Sol
Depart La Paz and travel to Copacabana, pausing for a generic lunch in a local market. Afterwards, take a Copacabana Town Stroll and visit the Lakeside Beach, following the shoreline and easy streets on foot as the water and hills shape the setting. Continue with the transfer from Copacabana to Isla del Sol, where a hotel on Isla del Sol or in Copacabana is provided, to be confirmed.
Day 4
Isla del Sol Trek and Return to La Paz
A scenic walk explores the southern side of Isla del Sol, pausing at the Inca Stairs and the Fountain of Youth while learning how the island shaped Inca cosmogony as a legendary birthplace with deep spiritual meaning for Andean people. Wide Lake Titicaca views accompany the route. A ferry then crosses from the island's small port to Copacabana, closing the lake chapter. The road transfer back to La Paz retraces the altiplano, a quieter re-entry to city life, with the night spent in La Paz.
Day 5
La Paz to Uyuni: Train Cemetery, Colchani and the Salar
A transfer from your La Paz hotel to El Alto International Airport leads to the flight to Uyuni, where a 4x4 awaits and the southern altiplano circuit starts. First comes the Uyuni Train Cemetery, then Colchani for a salt-harvesting visit. Crossing the Salar de Uyuni follows, with hexagons or mirror-like water depending on season, before reaching Incahuasi Island and its enormous cacti. Sunset out on the salt flat closes the day, then the drive back to Colchani and Hotel de Sal Luna Salada.
Day 6
Eduardo Avaroa Reserve and Laguna Colorada
A 4x4 journey south crosses lunar terrain into the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve, Bolivia's most visited protected area, where volcanoes, deserts and multi-colored lagoons unfold across the altiplano. Pink flamingos and llamas appear along the route. In the Siloli Desert, the Stone Tree, a wind-eroded rock formation, rewards a short stop. Laguna Colorada, the red lagoon, closes the day's visits before reaching Siloli-area accommodation for the night.
Day 7
Thermal Soaks and Desert Crossing to La Paz
An included breakfast precedes an optional morning dip in thermal waters said to have healing properties, a welcome reward after two full reserve days. The return route heads northeast through the Siloli Desert, also known as the Dali Desert for its surreal rock formations, passing the Green Lagoon (Laguna Verde). Though long, the drive keeps windows busy with colored, otherworldly terrain, reaching Uyuni by mid-afternoon for the evening flight to La Paz. A transfer from El Alto Airport follows, with a hotel in La Paz or Copacabana to be determined.
Day 8
La Paz: Free Morning and Departure Transfer
Breakfast is included before a free morning in La Paz, offering time to revisit a market, relax in a plaza, or watch the city go about its day. After the urban trek, the lake, and the salt flats, this unhurried final look at the capital is part of the experience, with your flight time as the only deadline. Later, a departure transfer collects you from your La Paz hotel and takes you to the airport for your flight home, closing the journey at the world's highest administrative capital.
