Colombia Andes Cloud Forest Photography Tour With Hummingbirds
Overview
This ten-day Colombia birdwatching photo tour moves at a relaxed pace through the Andean cloud forests, with no more than eight guests. We begin near Cali at San Felipe Lodge, photographing dawn feeders at La Florida, hummingbird setups in natural flower settings, the protected forest of Bosque de Niebla, and Finca Alejandría. At Doña Dora, the Andean Cock of the Rock displays at its lek, and Laguna de Sonso, the Cauca Valley’s largest remaining wetland, offers herons, jacanas and the Ruby-topaz Hummingbird.
In the Central Andes, two nights at Reserva Natural Río Blanco bring antpitta feeding stations and moss-covered trails. We finish at altitude: high-Andean hummingbirds at Hotel Termales del Ruiz, a morning in Los Nevados National Park for the Buffy Helmetcrest, then Tinamú Birding Nature Reserve, where owls and potoos call after dark.
Photographic opportunities
Across ten days in Colombia's Andean cloud forests, the itinerary offers a steady rhythm of photographic situations: dawn feeders where hummingbirds, tanagers and flowerpiercers arrive in soft light; a natural flower setup arranged by a local guide for elegant hummingbird portraits; and quiet trails through Bosque de Niebla and Río Blanco, where observation hides and moss-covered paths support patient work with mixed flocks. At Doña Dora, a rustic hide overlooks an Andean Cock of the Rock lek, and Laguna de Sonso's reedbeds and lagoons provide herons, jacanas, kingfishers and the Ruby-topaz Hummingbird. Higher up, Termales del Ruiz's gardens bring high-altitude hummingbirds close, while Los Nevados National Park opens onto páramo and volcanic scenery. At Tinamú, feeders and forest trails invite unhurried portraits, and after-dark sessions search for owls and potoos. The easy pace leaves room for composition, close-ups and adapting to the day's activity.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to birdwatchers and photographers who prefer a relaxed, easy pace over a demanding schedule. With no more than eight guests, days are built around unhurried time at feeders, natural flower settings, and quiet trails, letting the birds set the rhythm. There is room for observation, photography, and simple enjoyment of the landscape. Some walking is involved, including a short but demanding 700 m trail to a Cock of the Rock lek, and forest trails at altitude. If you value patient fieldwork and small-group travel, this journey is designed for you.

The transfer back to San Felipe Ecolodge ends with dinner and birding and wellness at San Felipe Lodge.
Day 3
Cloud Forest Birding at Bosque de Niebla and Finca Alejandría

After lunch, the journey continues to Finca Alejandría, a hummingbird paradise with orchids, bromeliads, and Andean biodiversity, before returning to San Felipe Lodge for dinner.
Day 4
Andean Cock of the Rock and Doña Dora Birding from San Felipe
Travel from San Felipe to Doña Dora, a tropical garden at 1,200 m between the Western Andes and the Pacific, alive with hummingbirds and exotic species. A short, demanding 700 m trail leads to a lek where male Andean Cock of the Rock display and call, observed from a rustic hide for photography. Lunch and birdwatching at the Doña Dora farmhouse follow, with fresh juice or coffee. Return to San Felipe, then dinner and birding and wellness at San Felipe Lodge amid cloud forest trails.
Day 5
San Felipe Birding, Laguna de Sonso, and Río Blanco
A pre-breakfast birding session in San Felipe opens the morning before checking out and transferring to Laguna de Sonso, Colombia's largest remaining natural wetland in the Cauca Valley. With a local guide, trails and observation points reveal lagoons, reedbeds and gallery forest, where the Ruby-topaz Hummingbird stands out among herons, jacanas, kingfishers, ibises and raptors. After lunch on the road, the journey continues to Reserva Natural Rio Blanco near Manizales. Following check-in and a short break, an afternoon birdwatching session around the cloud forest trails and feeders, if time allows, introduces mountain tanagers, hummingbirds and toucanets before dinner.
Day 6
Rio Blanco Cloud Forest Birding and Antpitta Feeding Stations
At Reserva Natural Rio Blanco near Manizales, breakfast is followed by morning birdwatching at the Antpitta Feeding Stations, where a local guide leads visits to managed sites for Bicolored, Chestnut-crowned, Slate-crowned and Brown-banded Antpittas, plus mixed flocks of mountain tanagers, brushfinches, fruiteaters and tapaculos. After lunch, Rio Blanco afternoon birding continues around hummingbird and fruit feeders and forest trails, with chances for Long-tailed Sylph, Collared Inca, Bronzy Inca, Tourmaline Sunangel, woodcreepers, Masked Saltator, Rusty-faced Parrot and Andean Motmot, before dinner.
Day 7
Hummingbird Feeders at Termales del Ruiz via Río Blanco and Hacienda El Bosque
After an included breakfast and checking out, transfer from Reserva Natural Río Blanco to Hacienda El Bosque, then continue to Hotel Termales Del Ruiz for check-in and a short break. A generic lunch and dinner are included before overnighting at Hotel Termales Del Ruiz.

Breakfast precedes birdwatching in Los Nevados National Park from Termales del Ruiz, exploring high-altitude páramo for Buffy Helmetcrest, Rainbow-bearded Thornbill and Rufous-fronted Parakeet amid volcanic scenery. After checking out, lunch and a transfer bring you to Tinamu Birding Nature Reserve for check-in. Late afternoon feeder watching at Tinamu Lodge may reveal tanagers, euphonias, aracaris and hummingbirds. Following dinner, nocturnal birding in the reserve searches for owls, Common Pauraques and potoos along forest trails.
Day 9
Tinamú Birding Nature Reserve: Feeders, Forest Trails and Photography
At Tinamú Birding Nature Reserve, an included breakfast precedes a guided morning along dry forest and woodland trails, when mixed flocks and regional specialties are searched for. Feeders and fruiting trees draw steady bird traffic. A generic lunch is available, then the afternoon shifts to patient photography around positioned feeders and forest paths, adapting to recent sightings and light. An evening backup and image review follows, closing with a generic farewell dinner.
Day 10
