Brazil Photography Tour: Jaguars, Dunes & Iguazú Falls – 32 Days
Overview
A single, uninterrupted 32-day route through Brazil’s most photographically distinct regions. The circuit begins among Rio de Janeiro’s forested peaks and the twin perspectives of Iguazú Falls, then moves through the Afro-Brazilian streets of Salvador before climbing into Chapada Diamantina’s canyon trails. A trek across the flooded dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses follows, with nights in hammocks and homestays. The final week routes along the Pantanal’s jaguar rivers, where boat safaris offer sustained observation of wildlife in open wetland light. This is a journey shaped by long walking days, early starts, and a steady rhythm of contrasting landscapes.
Why I created this expedition
The morning starts with cloud against Sugarloaf, the city of Rio still half in shadow. Corcovado looms, then the misted arcs of Iguazú, visited from both banks so you can sit with the shift in volume and angle as the light thins through spray. Salvador brings a sudden change of texture: cobbled Pelourinho, the colours of São Joaquim market, the scent of dendê oil rising from a moqueca in Rio Vermelho.
Heading inland, the lens turns vertical. Chapada Diamantina opens through rock and riparian forest—canyons near Lençóis, caves near Iraquara, the long walk into Vale do Pati where home-cooked meals and simple lodgings become part of the frame. Upland waterfalls such as Cachoeira da Fumaça and the deep wells of Poço Encantado teach patience with fleeting natural light.
A flight north lands in São Luís during the São João festival; from there, Barreirinhas leads to the white dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses. The trek crosses dune after dune, the lagoons reflecting cloud and sky like a freshly raked negative. Evenings sleep in hammocks in small oasis communities.
At last, the Transpantaneira road funnels south into Porto Jofre, where flat-bottomed boats push onto the Cuiabá and São Lourenço rivers. Jaguars appear at the water’s edge, giant otters work the channels, and caimans slide into backwater reflections. The whole arc of the country sits in the viewfinder—one moment a rainforest city, the next a bone-dry canyon, then a wetland river under a soft Pantanal dusk.
Photographic opportunities
The itinerary threads together starkly different visual vocabularies. In Rio, you work with early-morning cityscapes from Corcovado and the layered profiles of Tijuca Forest. Iguazú demands both wide-angle coverage of the falls’ curtain and telephoto isolation of swifts cutting through mist. Salvador’s historic centre yields street portraiture and market scenes with warm, saturated light.
Chapada Diamantina offers canyon landscapes, subterranean pools where sunlight falls in a single column, and waterfalls against dark rock faces. The trekking days in Vale do Pati push composition toward remote valley-wide scenes and intimate camp details. In Lençóis Maranhenses, the bare dunes and rainwater lagoons create minimalist, graphic compositions at dawn and dusk.
The Pantanal brings the long lens to the fore. From open boats, you can photograph jaguars on the riverbank, giant otters, capybaras, and a procession of waterbirds—storks, kingfishers, and herons—all in reflective wetland light that softens as the afternoon wears on.
Who this journey is for
This itinerary will appeal to photographers and birders who want one continuous Brazil program rather than separate trips, and who welcome early starts, long walking days, and a mix of surface textures from city streets to backcountry trails. It will suit those comfortable with moderate-to-advanced trekking days in Chapada Diamantina and on the Lençóis Maranhenses dune crossing, as well as the homestay and hammock-based accommodation used in Vale do Pati and the Maranhenses oasis communities. If you are prepared to carry your gear across varied terrain, adapt your shooting rhythm to sudden wildlife encounters, and let the journey’s pace remain deliberately unhurried, the circuit’s photographic range will feel like a true long-form project.
